To Roth or Not To Roth?

Or should I say, "to convert or not to convert?"

The rules are changing in 2010 as far as converting traditional IRA plans to Roth IRA plans. In an IRA, withdrawals are taxable, while withdrawals from a Roth IRA are not taxed.  In 2010 higher income families will be able to convert their traditional IRA plans to a Roth IRA plan.  Those who convert in 2010 can defer taxes for a year and spread payments equally over tax years 2011 and 2012.  It may or may not be a good opportunity for you to convert your plan.  I can help you to determine if this is a good idea for you.

A December housing report showed that there was a huge rebound in housing in November.  Sales of existing homes rose in November to the highest level in nearly three years, giving a big boost to the overall economy.

As of the writing of this newsletter, the Dow Jones (one of the indicators of the stock market) has risen 19% for the year.  The S & P 500 (another broad indicator of how stocks are doing) was up 24% for the year, and the Nasdaq stock market (mostly technology stocks) was up a whopping 43% for the year!  Goodbye and good riddance to 2008!

I work mainly with affluent families with substantial assets who are retired or approaching retirement.  I will help them develop a financial and estate plan that not only builds and preserves their wealth but also serves as a blueprint for reaching all of their financial and lifestyle goals.
