Tax Planning Before Year-End
Here are some tax strategies to consider before the end of the year:

1) Buy a new car! You may be able to deduct sales taxes and help the economy at the same time!

2) Those over the age of 50 who are contributing to a 401k can contribute as much as $22,000

3) Those over the age of 70 1/2 can still make a charitable contribution directly from an IRA account

4) There may be opportunities to take tax losses on investments up to $3,000

5) If you have had large outlays
for health care you may be able to take a deduction if expenses are more than 7.5% of adjusted gross income

Although unemployment is now over 10% and at the highest level in 26 years, there are reasons for optimism.  The economy grew at a faster than expected 3.5% annual rate in the third quarter of this year, signaling the end of the economic downturn.  Manufacturing activity hit its highest level in 3 1/2 years in October.  The stock market reached the highest level in over a year. And the Federal Reserve in early November said that household spending "appears to be expanding".  I hope all is well with your family as we continue forward into 2010.

I work mainly with affluent families with substantial assets who are retired or approaching retirement.  I will help them develop a financial and estate plan that not only builds and preserves their wealth but also serves as a blueprint for reaching all of their financial and lifestyle goals.

So What's The Deal With Thanksgiving?

If I sound like Jerry Seinfeld, its because I'm a big fan of the old "Seinfeld" TV show.  So what is the big deal with Thanksgiving?  What makes Thanksgiving such a special holiday?  A four-day weekend?  Endless football?  That bloated feeling after eating way too much turkey and pumpkin pie? Or is it the fact that my wife allows me to put up Christmas lights the next day while she goes off to the mall?

Hopefully we will all use the Thanksgiving break to think about our many blessings instead of worrying and stressing over our problems.  We could use the time to think of volunteer opportunities to help those who are less fortunate. Maybe we could all take more time with friends and family and remember what is really important in life.  I am hoping your Thanksgiving is a great one!
