Rule 240
True story.

A passenger called us from the airport.  His flight was canceled and the airline protected him on the next available flight, a day later.  We contacted the airline and had them confirm a flight departing in a few hours at no extra charge...on a competitor.

Knowing your rights under Rule 240, may mean the difference between arriving
home tonight - or the next day.

There's a lot of technical jargon, but generally the rule protects passengers whose 
flight is delayed or canceled, for what's called Irregular Ops (another term you
should remember!).  What this means is if your flight is canceled due to most any
reason, other than weather or Force Majeure (French for "superior force"), the airline MUST confirm you on the next available flight.  And not necessarily on their airline. 

Some low cost airlines are exempt.

Budget, Avis ban smoking in cars
Beginning Oct. 1, Avis and Budget will become the first major rental-car companies
to ban smoking in their entire North American fleets and to impose a cleaning fee
of up to $250 on customers who smoke in the cars.
