Teacher Feature
A NY City 8th grade math teacher presents lessons using the smartpen and notebook with his document camera for classroom viewing. The students take notes with their own smartpens so they can reference the steps later at home. Each student does his/her math homework using their smartpens and notebooks while recording themselves telling why they are doing that step of the problem - Math Think-Alouds.
They email the pencast of their homework to hand it in. The teacher checks their work but when he sees a series of mistakes he listens to the audio think-aloud to determine exactly what the student is confused about. He then works with students individually to remediate their misconceptions. He doesn't re-teach the lesson to the whole class - he re-teaches the portion that each student needs. The pencast and math think-aloud help him gain insight into how each student is processing the information. |

Sharon Porter, a Pulse smartpen user and Assistant Professor of Education at Eastern Oregon University, uses her Pulse smartpen to record and share constructive feedback from student teacher observations. During a student teacher's lesson, Sharon writes notes about what's happening in the classroom, while at the same time recording audio.
Sharon later shares her notes with the student teacher as a private pencast so he/she can hear how they sound during class. Before switching to Pulse, Sharon took notes on a laptop, which was distracting to students. Pulse lets Sharon take traditional notes (with pen and paper) so she's not a distraction to students, but even more importantly, Pulse allows Sharon to replay the student teacher's audio, which has made a big impact.
