Build a good foundation of key people in your network! |
LinkedIn is one of the largest, if not the largest, professional social networking site on the Internet. More than likely you have already signed up and created an account on this site. But are you really using all of the features available for the benefit of your personal or professional networking? Just like attending a networking event "live" you can't just pass out your business cards and consider it a success if you leave with an empty pocket. So, it's also true online that you really need to work your network. The beauty of LinkedIn is that you not only have your direct contacts available to you, but you can see who your contacts know. And that is valuable information. As your connections grow and you join groups on LinkedIn your connections grow exponentially. Whether you are looking for new career or business opportunities, networking the right way will reap many rewards.
So, to get started create a profile that will help you stand out from the crowd. It's not unlike a professional resume. What experience do you bring to the party that helps you stand apart from the crowd? Where does your expertise lie? Do you have any special talents? Are you passionate about a certain subject? Make sure you have a professional image uploaded. Don't use a casual photo. A professional image is the best. But, you don't have to be stodgy. Show your personality.
Add relevant keywords to your headline, summary and other sections so that you'll be found easier on search engines. Customize your website URLs. You don't necessarily have to direct the viewer to the home page of your company's website. If you have a landing page, that would work, as well. Add your blog and a link to your Twitter profile. That shows that you are knowledgeable of other social media sites.
So, if you haven't completed your LinkedIn profile or haven't opened an account, why don't you make a commitment to do that this week. you'll be glad you did so you can begin networking with your peers.
