Ninety-four men and women who served in all branches of the military arrived at Midway with their guardians and volunteers from the United Services Organization (USO) for a send-off celebration.
Over the past four years, Honor Flight Chicago has partnered with Southwest Airlines to escort thousands of veterans on this special trip.
The 3,000th Honor Flight veteran was on board today's flight, 88-year-old George Kaiser of Lake Forest, Illinois. He served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force during WWII.

The gate-side departure festivities included a roll call and performances by the vocal trio "Legacy Girls," who pay tribute to the famous Andrews Sisters.

In the nation's capital, the veterans experienced an unforgettable day of remembrance and reminiscing for many who have waited more than 60 years to see the Memorial. In addition to visiting the WWII Memorial, the veterans were to visit the Iwo Jima, Lincoln, Korean and Vietnam memorials.
More than 1,500 family, friends and supporters are expected to welcome the veterans when they return to Midway tonight. In addition, dozens of active duty military personnel, the USO of Illinois and Chicago Police Department Pipes and Drums Corps will participate in the festivities.
Honor Flight Chicago will sponsor nine more flights for the 2012 season, which runs through November 23.
Honor Flight Chicago's mission is to provide WWII veterans from the Chicagoland area with a visit to the National World War II Memorial and to show appreciation for their patriotism.
