Southwest Begins Nonstop Service from Chicago Midway to Atlanta
CHICAGO, February 12, 2012 -- The Chicago Department of Aviation (CDA) is pleased to announce that Southwest Airlines today kicked off new nonstop service from Chicago Midway International Airport to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, making it even easier for Chicagoans to get to the Peach State.
Southwest today started four daily flights to Atlanta at 8:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 3:45 p.m. and 8:45 p.m. Those flights are in addition to another four daily flights to Atlanta offered by Southwest-owned AirTran from Midway. Atlanta is Midway's No. 1 market.
The new service by Southwest, for which Midway is its largest airport hub, comes as Midway completed an incredible year of growth in 2011. Midway was named America's fastest-growing airport in 2011 by Airline Network News & Analysis (anna.aero), growing passenger traffic an incredible seven percent to nearly 19 million passengers and total flight operations by nearly four percent to 255,000.
Midway has continued to add new service. Southwest last year added flights from Midway to Charleston and Greenville/Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Newark, New Jersey. The newest Atlanta flights bring Southwest's daily departures at Midway to 214 and the total number of daily flights at the airport to 254.
"On behalf of Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, I'm delighted that Southwest has begun new service to Atlanta from ChicagoMidwayInternationalAirport, increasing the destination choices for our Midway passengers," said CDA Commissioner Rosemarie S. Andolino. "Chicago is now the largest city in the Southwest Airlines system in terms of daily departures, demonstrating Southwest's continuing commitment to Chicago and recognition that Chicago is truly the center of the nation's aviation system. And we are committed to providing air service to the destinations Midway travelers want to visit."
