We are pleased to announce that the Sayreville Public Library has been awarded a grant from the New Jersey Council for the Humanities in support of a family program entitled, Abe Lincoln in Person.

 
This educational offering, which takes place on Saturday, October 10th at 11:00 AM, will given children and their families insight into the personality and life of our 16th president.  Registration begins September 7th.

Chicken Soup BookA project to reach out to tweens and teens, designed by a teen. Book Discussion and activities based on the Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul books.  For children entering grades 5-8.  Do you want your child to have fun and healthy social interactions?  Do you want  them to discover ways to deal with their challenges and make better choices?  Do you want them away from the computer screen and doing something more productive for a few hours this summer?  If so, register them for this series of open discussions and activities addressing issues such as relationships, peer pressure and entering new and unfamiliar situations.
Note: This is a project run by a college freshmen under the supervision of her Girl Scout troop leader.

Mouse Basics 8/3-Learn how to navigate, highlight, scroll and select with the mouse. 

Internet Basics TBA- Learn about the various types of Internet sites and how they make money or otherwise pay for themselves.  Typing competence is a prerequisite.  If someone cannot type but wants to observe, they are welcome, but they will not be able to participate hands on.

Email Basics TBA- Create a free email account and learn how to send and receive emails. Typing competence is a prerequisite.  If someone cannot type but wants to observe, they are welcome, but they will not be able to participate hands on.

Open Office Writer Basics TBA- Learn how to create a word processing document, set line spacing, page orientation, use spelling checks and save your work. Typing competence is a prerequisite.  If someone cannot type but wants to observe, they are welcome, but they will not be able to participate hands on.

Children age 12 & up are invited to PUNK YOUR TEE!  Using tips from the book, Generation T by Megan Nicolay, we'll turn our old T-Shirts into new fashion creations.  Shirts can be any color and shirts with logos will work especially well. Things Not Seen BookJoin us for a discussion of "Things Not Seen" by Andrew Clements, one of the selections on the Middle School Summer Reading List.

From Publisher's Weekly:The earnest and likable 15-year-old narrator is the principal thing not seen in Clements's fast-paced novel, set in Chicago. As the book opens, the boy discovers that he has turned invisible overnight. Bobby breaks the news to his parents who, afraid of being hounded by the media, instruct him to share his dilemma with no one. But when Bobby ventures out of the house and visits the library, he meets Alicia, a blind girl to whom he confides his secret.

A native of China, the peach was first introduced to the New World by Spanish explorers in 1571.

By the 1600's peaches had become an important crop in New Jersey. Join us when library favorite Judith Krall Russo returns and learn the history and folklore of this New Jersey summertime favorite.

How to Keep Your Computer and Children Safe on the Internet

Sick ComputerRobin Kessler from R&D Internet will provide a free seminar on keeping your computer safe (XP/Vista) from viruses, spyware, and malware, and the goods and bads of Windows Vista. You will also get a sneak peek at Windows 7, Microsoft's newest Operating System. The seminar will also include ways to keep your children safe on the Internet!
Robin will raffle-off copies of a fully-licensed anti-spyware program!  Note that this program will run slightly over the library's scheduled hours.
