Training Partnership Puts
15 People into Jobs Even in this time of high unemployment, Niles manufacturing company Modineer was having difficulty finding skilled employees who met their customer's certification requirement for production of a specific product. But, through a creative partnership, Modineer and Lake Michigan College developed a customized 40-hour MIG course that trained 15 individuals for these specialized jobs. Upon completion of the course, all 15 students were offered positions with the company. Read more about how the training delivered at LMC helped to put local people back to work.

100% Nursing Licensure Pass Rate
Nursing students are clearly receiving an extraordinary
quality level of training at LMC, as reflected in pass rates of the National
Council of Licensure Examinations (NLCEX). 100% of the 55 students who took the NLCEX-RN (Registered Nurse) exam
satisfactorily passed the examination on the first attempt from the 2009
graduating students. The
national pass rate is 87.61% The
PN (Practical Nurse) class of 13 nursing students also had a 100% pass rate on
the NLCEX-PN, with the
national pass rate at 85.72%. LMC's Registered
Nursing program is fully approved by the Michigan State Board of Nursing and
accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.

Conference and Event Services Buy Local Program
The next time you're enjoying a meal at a Mendel Center event, it is likely that much of the food was grown right here in southwest Michigan. The College's Conference and Event Services is in the second
year of the Buy Local program with the assistance of the Benton Harbor Fruit
Market. This year, more than one ton of local produce has been purchased and processed on campus for use throughout the year. According to Food and Beverage manager Quinn Tabbert, the College's goal is to eliminate all frozen commercially prepared vegetables. Tabbert stated, "We are re-investing in our community and finding that the products from local growers is superior to what we can purchase from the national companies." Other local companies the College purchases from include Everyday Bread, St. Joseph; Santa Barbara Cheesecakes, Berrien Springs; Piggot's Fruit Stand, Benton Harbor; The Livery, Benton Harbor; and The Round Barn, Baroda.

Online Wellness Program
LMC is on the cutting edge of online programs, with the
latest being the redesign of the health and fitness curriculum to include an
online wellness program. Students still end up in the gym for pre-assessments,
individual training and workouts, but they use the online program for
orientation, training lectures, setting fitness goals, and receiving a
prescribed program based on those goals. Physical education and wellness instructor, Jill Claeys, designed the
curriculum so the students receive individual training and customized workouts to achieve their fitness goals. Students in South Haven use Shoreline
Rehab Center and Bertrand Crossing students use the Niles-Buchanan YMCA. A post-assessment is taken to see the student's
success. Students see the benefits of
exercise and learning increases from the online lectures. Community members can also sign up for the
online program by calling 927-8100 ext. 5283. |
Tiny House Graduates of LMC's first Green Building Academy spent 600-hours of classroom and lab time learning construction skills and putting them into practice through the construction of the Tumbleweed Tiny House. This one hundred two-square-feet of simple living includes the main living space with a small bathroom and loft above. The house plan incorporated solar
panels and other green technology for self- sufficiency and energy conservation.
Funding from a grant allowed for the purchase of the house plans and construction materials. The Green Building Academy is an 8-week course designed to expose participants to the rapidly evolving demands of a "greener" future. Students receive a mixture of class-based and field instruction as they directly apply theory to practice. Upon successful completion of the course, students complete modules in Green Advantage Dual Environmental Exam Certification, Green Roof Technology, Straw Bale construction, Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Concrete Countertops, LEED Green Associate Exam Prep, Weatherization and Energy Auditing, Lead paint Safety for Contractors, EPA Stormwater Management, and OSHA Asbestos Awareness. |
