Market Master helps Mendel Center Launch Buy-local ProgramBuy Local
Lee LeVanway's passion for the local agricultural industry has helped LMC's Mendel Center create a new menu of local choices for people coming to the Center for events. LeVanway, who is the Market Master for the Benton Harbor Fruit Market, and Quinn Tabbert, LMC's Food and Beverage Manager, have teamed up to go directly to local farmers and processors to select the finest fruits and vegetables from the region. Quinn and her staff have already processed and frozen more than a ton of food so that locally grown produce can be available on the Mendel Center menu year-round. See just how much has been processed so far.
Music Instructor Elfie Schults-Berndt 1954-2009
LMC Music program director, Elfie Schults-Berndt has died after a long battle with breast cancer.  Elfie's enthusiasm, love of music and her students were instrumental in building one of the best community college music programs in the country.   During her 20-year tenure with the College, enrollment nearly doubled to 600 students. She also led the "Music Matters" fund-raising program which generated nearly one-half million dollars in support for music student scholarships, new pianos and other instruments. After the campaign, LMC was recognized as the first All Steinway Institution in Michigan. Elfie was the first LMC instructor to be honored as Michigan Professor of the year awarded by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. The Lake Michigan College community extends its sympathies to her family, students and the many friends she left behind.
Upton Announces LMC Energy Grant
Thanks in part to a $150,000 federal grant secured by Congressman Fred Upton, LMC will expand the scope of its career training program from nuclear energy to also include wind energy and utility worker training. The measure, which is expected to be considered by the Senate in September, will support the College's new Wind Energy Concentration and Utility Worker program. At the announcement of the grant, Upton commended LMC for its leadership in creating the innovative Energy Production Technology degree program which will ensure southwest Michigan's place at the forefront in the development of diverse energies that will power our region for generations to come.

LMC Foundation Fills the Gap

While endowments across the country have had to limit awards due to the drop in investment earnings, that will not be the case at LMC. LMC students who receive scholarship support from the Foundation's endowment funds will not see any drop in their awards from a year ago, thanks to the generosity of LMC donors and the LMC Foundation.
