The Otto Bock Experience

Otto Bock

Scott and John spent 2 days during the last week in February with the Otto Bock team in Salt Lake City, Utah to tour the foot and liner manufacturing plant and to meet with the engineering design team.
John on prosthoses

During the visit to Otto Bock, Scott and John had the opportunity to experience what it would be like to walk on Otto Bock's Axtion foot.

Watch them walk!

Optimus Academy Update
by Scott Schall

I recently became aware of the Ohio Physical Therapy Association's mandatory 'Prosthetic Curriculum Topics' for Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) students.

The topics are listed below.

Although we touch on 'Risk Factors' for amputation, we do not discuss 'Factors That Influence Vascular Disease' in the 'Prosthetic Overview' course.  For those therapy groups who have not completed the 'Prosthetic Overview' course, the course will be updated to include a more in-depth overview of these 2 topic areas.

For those therapy groups who have already completed the 'Prosthetic Overview' course, I will cover these 2 topic areas through this and next month's eNewsletter.

Mandatory 'Prosthetic Curriculum Topics' for PTA Students
  • Risk factors
  • Factors that influence vascular disease
  • Types of lower extremity amputations
  • Stump wrapping guidelines
  • Types of post-op dressings
  • Components of a prosthesis
  • Considerations for prosthetic training
  • Potential complications
  • Gait deviations
Risk Factors for Amputation
Each year, the majority of new amputations occur due to complications of the vascular system (of or pertaining to the blood vessels), especially from diabetes. These types of amputations are known as dysvascular. Although rates of cancer and trauma-related amputations are decreasing, rates for dysvascular amputations are on the rise.

Download our Fact Sheet on Amputation Statistics.

As for an update on the quarterly courses being offered, the majority of participating therapy groups have completed the 'Prosthetic Overview' course.  The 2nd course, 'Transtibial Prosthetics', has been presented to Trinity Community of Beavercreek and a number of other presentations have already been scheduled.

Quarterly Course Listing
  1. Prosthetic Overview
  2. Transtibial Prosthetics
  3. Transfemoral Prosthetics
  4. Amputee Mobility Predictor
  5. Transtibial Gait Training and Deviations
  6. Transfemoral Gait Training and Deviations
  7. Partial Foot / Symes / Knee Disarticulation / Hip Disarticulation
  8. Upper Extremity Prosthetics
  9. Computer Alignment System (COMPAS)
  10. Microprocessor-Controlled Knees
