Scott Schall presents at Northwestern University
Scott Schall completed Northwestern University's Prosthetic Certificate program in September 2008. As part of his 1-year
prosthetic residency, Scott is required to complete a Directed Study Project;
he presented 2 lectures at Northwestern University
on 1/16/09 that are now included in the online portion of Northwestern
University's Prosthetic and Orthotic Blended Learning Program.
The 1st of 2 lectures is titled, "Patent Overview for
Practitioners". Scott stated, "When I took the online portion of the
prosthetic program, a patent attorney conducted a lecture about patents and I
found it very discouraging. I want to provide an inspiring lecture on the
subject from an inventor's point of view and hope that the younger
practitioners of tomorrow will develop better solutions for our patients of the
future". Scott is a contributing inventor of 16 US Patents. The 2nd
of 2 lectures is titled, "The Zipper Cast - Removable Rigid Dressing and
Immediate Post-Operative Prothesis". During Scott's recent studies, it
became apparent that the use of The Zipper Cast as a removable rigid dressing
is not in widespread use. The Zipper Cast is a removable rigid dressing
that is applied immediately after amputation surgery for some patients who
receive a transtibial (below-knee) amputation. The Zipper Cast allows
caregivers the ability to unzip the cast to inspect the incision and change
dressings while also allowing for some therapeutic treatment such as exercising
and maintaining the knee's range of motion. Without The Zipper Cast,
prosthetists are required to bi-valve the rigid cast and then re-apply a new
cast. Besides the above-mentioned benefits, patients benefit from not
having to go through a sometimes painful cast change.

Rick Young i-LIMB wearer
"TIME Magazine Names i-LIMB Hand a 2008 Top
Invention." The i-LIMB Hand, the world's first commercially
available bionic hand developed by Touch Bionics, has been recognized by TIME
Magazine as one of the Top 50 inventions of 2008. In November 2007, John Brandt and Scott Schall received their i-LIMB certification. Rick Young (pictured) is one of
the first patients with a transradial amputation (below-elbow) in the Dayton
area to be fit with the i-LIMB Hand. Rick lost his left arm below the
elbow from an industrial accident at a foundry in 2005. Rick continues
to work at the foundry full-time. He's also a family man with a wife and 2 daughters, and he's a soccer coach! The new i-Limb
hand allows him to accomplish many more tasks - such as using a key-board,
holding a steering wheel, holding a cup of coffee, and using an ATM
card. i-LIMB on YouTube!
