Strength Training for Tennis
|
By Craig Huntington
Strength training is an absolute requirement for anyone
serious about playing tennis. Just because its participants traditionally
wear crisp whites and play to polite applause doesn't mean that tennis isn't
tough on the body.
During vigorous play, which usually takes place on a hard
concrete surface, the hips, knees, ankles, elbows and shoulders are all exposed
to dangerous injury causing forces. Serious tennis players need strength
training to fortify their bodies against this kind of abuse. When a person
becomes stronger their resistance to injury becomes greater.
The spine in particular takes a tremendous beating, not only
from pounding the pavement but also every time a player swings his or her
racket. During the tennis swing the players subject their spines to a
tremendous amount of rotational force from top to bottom
Exercises that specifically target the spinal muscles are
crucial for tennis players or any other athlete for that matter. See my article
about strength training for golf: http://huntfitco.com/23.html
At Back2Health: Spinal Fitness we are the only non physical
therapy clinic in New England equipped with
MedX Core technology. No other form of activity even comes close to targeting
the spinal muscles like the MedX Core system. There is literally no other way to
work these muscle groups effectively.
We have the Core Lumbar for the lower back, the Core Torso
Rotation (a must for tennis players as well as golfers), the 4-Way Neck, and the
Core Abdominal. You simply will not believe how these machines feel unless you
come in and give them a try. Whether you play competitively or for just
pure enjoyment, a proper fully body strength training program including these MedX machines is a must if you want
to continue playing at a level you are happy with.
