Greetings!

We hope everyone's holidays went well, and now it's time to get back to reality...

In this issue, you can read about what makes the MedX Lumbar Extension Machine so effective, and also about the NanOmega3 essential fat drink mix.

MedX Lumbar Extension Machine

As mentioned in the last issue, this machine is the foundation of our business.  There is not, repeat - THERE IS NOT - another machine in existence that is capable of isolating the muscles of the lumbar spine via pelvic restraint.  Why you may ask? Simple - MedX owns the patents on such a restraint system.  Why is this isolation necessary you may ask? Again, simple - without it, all other 'low back' machines are really hip extension machines. (It should be noted that all other 'low back' exercises, e.g., hyperextensions, also shift the focus to the stronger hips instead of the targeted lumbar region.)

To demonstrate the difference proper equipment can make, consider this experiment pitting the MedX machine vs. the Nautilus and Cybex versions:  Strength was tested at various points of the subject's range of motion via the MedX machine.  Note that since this is the only machine capable of testing strength (which includes accounting for stored energy torque and counterbalancing torso weight), it had to be used to establish a baseline for each user.  Four groups were devised, split amongst the machines (MedX medical, Nautilus, Cybex), and a control group (no exercise).  After 12 weeks, strength was tested again via the MedX medical machine.  Not surprisingly, only the MedX group showed improvements in strength of the spinal muscles.  However, those using the Nautilus and Cybex gained no more strength than those not exercising at all.  This means 12 weeks of exercise had no effect whatsoever on the targeted area.  What a wonderful waste of time!  Interestingly, even with the results of this experiment available to therapists, the Cybex Low Back machine may be the most typically used in rehab settings.

At Back2Health, we use the MedX Core Lumbar Strength machine for low back strengthening and rehabilitation.  Although not equipped with testing equipment, the exercise results from this machine are identical to those with the medical version.  For an excellent example of what is possible with this machine please see this article.

Everyone with low back pain needs to know about this machine.  In the past two years of operation, it has allowed us to help many people who thought they had exhausted their options in finding relief.  This includes degenerative issues, a few people still in discomfort post-spinal surgery, and many herniated discs.  A good number of these people experienced physical therapy that was literally useless.  In all cases, strength and pain operated on an inversely proportional relationship; as lumbar strength increased, pain was diminished.

The biggest obstacle we've come across is the idea that use of this machine can make matters worse.  Provided that one is honest with their feedback, and follows our recommendations, this simply will not happen.

There are still many more that haven't heard of MedX let alone Back2Health.  Please help spread the word.  If one is suffering from low back issues, and doesn't wish to go through our entire golf workout, one ten minute session per week is only $20.
NanOmega3

As mentioned last time, Craig and I have been virtually living off a triumvirate of BioPharma Scientific products for the past month plus.  Their essential fat product NanOmega3 is far superior to other products for several reasons (see below).  It has been especially formulated to support:
  • Mental Focus and Healthy Mood / Memory
  • Maintenance of Normal Optimal Cholesterol and Triglyceride Levels
  • Healthy Skin and Hair
  • Maintenance of Optimal Blood Pressure
  • Healthy Cardio-Vascular System
  • Maintaining Visual Acuity
  • Healthy Joints
  • Gastro-Intestinal Health
  • Balanced Immune and Inflammatory Response
  • Additional Antioxidant Protection
  • Healthy Bones
  • Healthy Prostate and Breast Cells
As a refresher on essential fats, the following is from the BioPharma Scientific website:

Essential fatty acids (EFA) are good fats that can only be obtained in the diet. These fatty acids not only provide fuel but also effect many biological processes such as inflammation, immune and brain functions, and blood lipid levels (triglycerides).

There are two families of EFAs: omega-3 and omega-6. The dietary balance between these two EFAs strongly affects their functions. An optimal dietary balance of omega-6 to omega-3 may be 3:1 or even lower. The Standard American Diet (S.A.D.), rich in omega-6 vegetable oils (corn, safflower,) and saturated fats, is 10:1 or higher!

The World Health Organization (WHO) and the American Heart Association (AHA) recommend we consume much more omega 3 fatty acids, while cutting down on omega-6 EFAs, trans fat (hydrogenated), saturated fat, cholesterol and fried fats.

The main sources of omega 3 fatty acids in the American diet include fish, flaxseed and walnuts. Other good, but less common sources include pumpkin, chia and hemp seeds, canola oil, avocado and blue-green algae (spirulina/ chlorella). Grass fed livestock are also much higher in omega-3 fats than grain fed domestic livestock.

Therefore, when it comes to a healthy omega 3/6 EFA balance, it is difficult for most Americans to eat a balanced diet. Because of this, many health professionals recommend omega 3 dietary supplements and consuming the new "functional foods" now being fortified with omega-3 EFAs.

While in the past I certainly have recommended EFA supplementation to clients, for the most part this was limited to fish and/or flax oil in capsule form.  However, BioPharma Scientific's patented NanoSorb technology allows for much greater absorption through a delicious orange-pineapple flavored drink mix than capsule form can allow.

Additionally, this product includes synergistic natural vitamins E and D3 and highly bioavailable forms of B6, B12 and Folic acid.  Without these, nutrient uptake is simply not optimal.  It's not worth dealing with fish burps if one isn't receiving the benefit of the product, but this is unfortunately what happens with traditional means of EFA supplementation (i.e., capsules).

For more information, please see this webpage and click on the NanOmega3 link.  We do not have any samples of this product at our studio, but one can obtain said samples via this page.

Once again, we hope everyone enjoyed the holidays.  If you have any questions regarding getting in shape and/or dealing with nagging back or neck pain, please don't hesitate to drop us a line.

Sincerely,

Adam Reid
