UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL WITH FAMILY - MY NEW VIDEO
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Go to my channel: www.youtube.com/janetluongo3.  Scroll to Pitching in for a Family Feast. Just over one minute.  You've got cooking to do!
Greetings!
PEOPLE ARE PRIMARY
It's not always sweet as apple pie to be with family - extended family, step family, step-step family, long lost family, friends of family.  But though we've had our share of sorrow, pain and conflict, the gathering of family has become what I cherish the most about Thanksgiving.  Most Americans seek out family to be with, or create their own sense of family with best friends or kind strangers.  If you're hosting, get everyone involved - ask guests to bring something, hopefully dishes they've made.  If you're a guest, pitch in - it feels good to be part of the effort to create the feast.
People, caring for people, making time, slowing down, that's the best part of family meals.  You can let little things go if you keep this truth in your heart.
I'm happy that this Thanksgiving everyone in the family has sound health - my sister recovered from open heart surgery, and my husband from a bad bicycle accident.
Think about it - Thanksgiving is one of the only American holidays that has no religious or civic purpose.  It's purpose is to give thanks.  That of course is a deeply spiritual practice.  Let's put that first and foremost in our thoughts.  Let's stop for a day trying to fix things and Congress and other people, and just pay attention to what's working in our lives.  Some people think that if they feel thankful for what they have, they'll never grow beyond it, they'll be stuck.  But it's really the opposite.  It's a funny thing.  The happier we are with what we have, as flawed as it may be, the more that positive attitude attracts more positive people and things into our lives.
Watch my new 1 min video of me up close and personal at home with my family.  Everyone is pitching in to create a holiday feast with a free range turkey. Click on www.youtube.com/janetluongo3, Scroll to Pitching in for a Family Feast.
Wishing you many simple things to be thankful for,
Janet
LUONGO FAMILY FEAST INGREDIENTS
Most people love stuffing
We make our own from multigrain bread that we either leave out to dry, or we toast.  We add giblets from the turkey, mushrooms, and onions - it tastes absolutely delicious.  Stuff the bird lightly, roast the rest of the stuffing.
The best potatoes are not white.
Around the turkey, put lots of small potatoes.  Some people like white potatoes; we add lots of other kinds of all different colors - from gold to orange to reddish - we find great variety at the farmers' market.  (Yes, Farmers' Markets often last until Thanksgiving).  Yams and sweet potatoes are sweeter and are more nutritious and our bodies absorb the sugars more slowly (which is good for diabetics and everyone).  Keep the nutritious skin on to keep the flavor in.
Vegetables rule the roost
This week, plan lots of vegetables that are in season as the stars of the meal.  Enjoy the fresh flavors of what's being harvested now, such as squash, zucchini, butternut squash, and make sure to include a seasonal greens like green beans or brussel sprouts. Very special.  Add high quality butter or cheese, or some olive or flax oil, salt and pepper.
Cranberry sauce from - believe it or not - cranberries
When I was a kid in the 50s, we had the canned variety that jiggled - it looked like jello - who knew they were simply berries?  Then I discovered how to make our own cranberry sauce that is so much more tasty and healthy.  Just buy a bag of cranberries.  Heat the berries up in water, add sugar to taste.  Chill and serve in a dish.  Can you believe how easy that is!?
Pumpkin for dessert.
Go for pumpkin pie.  Although 90% of the pumpkins harvested in America are used for carving jack-o-lanterns, pumpkins are one of the best foods for you. Buy a high quality one with good crust and natural sugars, or add your own natural sugars, such as agave nectar, maple syrup, honey, or sweeten with my favorite - powder of the sweet plant stevia, which has zero calories and zero chemicals.  Whipped cream is good for topping.
From nuts to soup.
Before and during the meal we put out lots of seasonal walnuts that are harvested in New England.  You can add them to dishes like the stuffing.  And it's good to save the carcass, boil it down with water, add carrots, onions, celery and its leave and you have soup to eat for days after.
