Picture Books Alive and Well at
Athens Academy By Caroline Ridlehuber,
Dean of Academics (K3-Grade 6)
A recent article in The New York Times entitled "Picture Books No Longer a Staple for Children," cited booksellers and publishers who say that picture books are no longer profitable as parents encourage their young children to move quickly to text-heavy "chapter books" as a more rigorous way to advance their academic skills. At Athens Academy picture books are a mainstay of literature for children with their lavish illustrations, attractive covers, and large print. A stroll through the Pre/Lower School media center offers tempting titles and colorful, intriguing pictures on every hand as children line up to check out old favorites and new discoveries. An Important Note
In collaboration with Pour, Inc. and The Connecting Point, Athens Academy's eighth grade students, parents and faculty are offering a mobile Food Pantry on campus Friday, November 19, 2010. The giveaway is first-come, first-served; needy families will need to indicate monthly income and the number of children, adults and/or seniors in the family on forms filed with Pour, Inc. and The Connecting Point. The food pantry will run from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on the Preschool, Lower and Middle School side of campus.
As a result of this offering, pick-up for all students remaining on campus in Extended Day or other activities after 4:00 p.m. will be from the Upper School entrances off Spartan Lane or route 441. Parents picking up from Extended Day should enter the playground from the gate adjacent to the Tillman Center turnaround. Staff will be at that entrance to the playground to assist with pick-up. |
