English chair wins Kennedy Center honor
English department chair Vincent Catano P'01 has been named a recipient of the Kennedy Center's 2012 Sondheim Teaching Awards. He is one of the ten teachers in the country to receive the prestigious award.
The Sondheim Teaching Awards honor "the contributions of specific teachers and reward them for their dedication and service..." In nominating Catano, his colleague and former student Mark Smith '85 wrote, "I was a C-minus student with no enthusiasm for the written word. In fact, any written word I ever read, I forgot, and any written word I had to read and write about only compounded my fears and heightened my anxiety. However, one man halted the fears and anxiety...[read more]

Extra Innings
Post-show analysis with Mark Woodall '12
CM's musical production of Damn Yankees on Wednesday night gave a capacity crowd plenty to talk about. One of the show's stars, Mark Woodall '12 (below), still exhausted from six weeks of rehearsals and performances, managed to make sense of it all one morning later. Q: What made the "Damn Yankees" team come together? A: Everybody loved the show, worked well together, and when it came down to it, we put on a great show.Q: Who was the rookie of the year - someone new to the musical stage? A: Alex Young '13. It was his first year doing the musical. He really came through and surprised all of us.Q: Unsung hero of the team? A: Sean Lawler '13. He not only played two different characters but was also on the stage crew. Very impressive.Q: Any pinch hitters who subbed in or picked up slack in the last minute? A: All the ball players had a pretty big role to fill, adding choreography to all the songs in the musical. Q: MVP? A: Andy Rogantino '12. He started on the musicals this year. He went out on the stage and had everyone laughing and in tears.Q: What about the coaching staff? A: Mr. Spaner was so enthusiastic, and Ms. Cells was so informative in the choreography. They worked very well together and I'm excited to see what they'll do next year.Q: Do you forgive me for using all these baseball metaphors? A: Yes.Watch highlights from Damn Yankees - click here.

BERSI program hosts guest speaker
On Wednesday, April 18th at 7:00pm, two representatives from International Partners in Mission (IPM) will be in Boston as part of a tour to visit their partner schools. Catholic Memorial has been a part of IPM immersion trips to El Salvador and the Dominican Republic since 2004, and we have always been impressed with what they have to offer.
One of the visitors is Erika Murcia (pictured), IPM's Regional Coordinator for Latin America and the Caribbean.
This is an extraordinary opportunity to hear firsthand about the positive energy that our students' visits have created through our Latin American BERSI trips. Please join us on Wednesday - an RSVP is requested but not required! Questions? See Mr. Murray.

Shakespeare's Knights
7th-8th graders stage the Bard's best
Twelve students in grades 7 and 8 gave a rousing and memorable performance of a dozen Shakespeare scenes in two performances this month directed by Ross MacDonald.
Ranging from tragedy to comedy, the scenes gave an evening audience on March 21 and the entire Middle School Program on March 22 plenty to digest, and it showcased some of CM's emerging dramatic talents.
Whether in Joseph McCauley's commanding Quince, Josh Mullin's riotous Falstaff, Connor Sullivan's soul-searching Richard III (above), Will Moriarty's stern Cassius or a dozen other memorable roles, the cast gave everyone some serious moments - and a few ribald ones...[read more]

Varsity lacrosse is off to its strongest start ever - winning its first five games. A dozen or more of its goals have come from John Harrison '12. "There's a lot of good offense going on," Harrison said of this year's team chemistry. "We have a lot of strong returners, with Tyler Bogart '15 being the only new player on offense. And on defense, we've got senior long-pole midi Chris Ryan, who is playing real well. Coach Lynch is getting us in good shape and working us in practice to get the plays down." The team faces Scituate tomorrow in the annual Chowda Cup tournament finals.
Varsity track won its opening meet against Malden Catholic on Tuesday, 78-53 - in its first home meet on the new track surface. Up next for the team is the Catholic Conference relays on Tuesday.
