From the Guidance Dept.
There are many new things to report from the Guidance Office this fall. These involve new personnel, new procedures, and new opportunities for our students. | | Bob TeganDirector of Guidance |
The 2011-2012 school year welcomes one new counselor, Carolyn White. Ms. White previously served as the Director of Guidance at Elizabeth Seton Academy in Dorchester. She brings a refreshing perspective and an energetic work ethic. She is a skilled, veteran counselor who has a complete knowledge of our Naviance web portal that is used to transfer school documents electronically to colleges. In addition, Ms. White is the driving force behind the establishment of a Dual Enrollment collaboration with Emmanuel College. In this program, a junior or senior from Catholic Memorial could take one or two classes on the college campus and interact with college students... [read more]

Triple-threat: Donnelly leads Speech Team
In speech and debate circles, the "triple-break" is as difficult and esteemed as the triple lutz in ice-skating. At the George Mason tournament in Fairfax, Virginia on December 3, however, team captain Kevin Donnelly '12 did it - making the final rounds in three speech categories: dramatic interpretation, impromptu reading, and duo.

The speech team, coached by Rob Croteau '93, at George Mason University.
|
Donnelly was joined by a dozen students at the prestigious national tournament, two of whom "double broke" - Mark Woodall '12 and Andrew Rogantino '12. A week later, these three, joined by a strong team performance, led CM to a 4th place finish at the Lincoln-Sudbury High tournament...[read more]

'Tis the Season...

Thanks to the efforts of every student and family in the CM community this Christmas, hundreds of others will feel more blessed and have a brighter Christmas season. Above, toys that overflowed boxes in homerooms.
In the past three weeks alone, students have led Campus Ministry, Edmund Rice Society, and National Honor Society efforts to collect books, clothing, toys and blood for the Red Cross. They've written letters to alumni serving in the armed forces abroad, rang the Salvation Army bell at Roche Brothers with faculty, and committed countless other random acts of kindness.
The numbers reveal the generous spirit of our student body: over 200 books donated to Hooks on Books; over a thousand Christmas toys donated for Christmas in the City and the Mather School Carnival, over 200 bags of clothing for needy families throughout Boston, and over 60 pints of blood in the annual NHS Blood Drive.
CM students got an early gift from President Paul Sheff '62 on November 28: the announcement of a President's Holiday. Please note: Christmas vacation will now start a day early - with no classes on Wednesday, December 21!

Four honors for Model UN as season opens
Ronald Claude '12, Ryan Walsh '13, Gus Erikson '13 and Ryan Lepore '14 have been named honorable delegates at the first two Model UN conferences this year. At last week's St. John's Prep Conference, Erikson received a prestigious "Outstanding Delegate" award, given to only a handful of the 430 participants. In the past year, nine students have earned such top honors for the team, which history teacher Vincent Bradley moderates. "This team has earned excellent experience and continues to practice hard for each tournament," says Bradley. This year, the team will travel to Dartmouth College, Carnegie Mellon University and elsewhere to compete against peers from schools nationwide. Read more...

Strengthening relationships with God, self, others
Juniors and seniors headed south on November 21, to the idyllic shores of Wareham, Mass. for the annual fall overnight retreat, sponsored by Campus Ministry. There, they spent thirty-six hours in discussion, reflection and camaraderie, getting to know one another and their teachers better. Junior Tom Hurley had been on the class-wide retreats in his freshman and sophomore years, but enjoyed both the small-size and tranquility that this one had to offer.
