faculty and staff, we had a very smooth opening of the school year. It is hard to believe that we are almost into our third week of school.
Included in this letter is important information for every family. First of all, I wanted to send along a list of teacher voice-mailbox accounts - click here to download/print. Parents may call these numbers to leave messages for individual teachers. The numbers located in the column marked "Voicemail" are the necessary phone extensions. In order to use the voice-mailbox accounts, parents may call the school's main number at 617-469-8000 and then dial the individual teacher's four-digit extension number. If you misplace this list, you may also dial the main number (617-469-8000) and press the pound key (#) for the dial-by-name directory.
Sometime after 4:00pm on Wednesday, September 28th, we will test our Alert-Now phone system. The Alert-Now system enables us to instantly send a pre-recorded message to all contact numbers in our database. We will use the system selectively throughout the year to disseminate such important information as the sudden cancellation of classes because of bad weather. If you do not receive a call on Wednesday evening, please contact the school on Thursday.
Also, please click on the following to download and read these important notices:
The parents of seniors are reminded that for those who missed the August dates, formal graduation portrait re-takes will take place at school on Tuesday, September 27th and Wednesday, Sept. 28th. Questions regarding senior yearbook photos should be directed to Mr. Colarossi.
The August mailing included an emergency contact form. If you have not yet done so, please complete the form and return it to the Main Office as soon as possible. The form will provide us with critical information in the case of an emergency.
Sincerely,
 Richard F. Chisholm Principal

Welcome, new Knights!
If it wasn't official on their first day, it certainly was on Thursday morning this week. The newest Knights - the Class of 2015 and the Class of 2017 - prepped, studied, crammed and sat for their first test of the year.
With the administration of the summer reading assessment, their grade-point averages and competitive drives kicked in and their journeys as Knights began.
But well before any quizzes and tests, these classes got to know one another in the orientations at the start of the school year. For the seventh graders, that meant getting to know their homeroom teachers, advisors and guidance staff and learning their way around campus...[read more]

Projecting our mission forward
What follows is the text of a letter sent to all current parents this week from President Paul Sheff '62.
Last fall I wrote to you about a very exciting undertaking, namely, our commitment to a carefully-thought out vision for Catholic Memorial School. I write now to bring you up-to-date about that vision, as well as other initiatives at our school that are slowly transforming what we look like and how we go about our business.
Let me begin by explaining two terms: mission and vision. The mission of Catholic Memorial is to engender in our boys a commitment to a lifelong love of learning and to Catholic Christian witness. Mission is who we are now, what we do. Vision takes mission and projects it forward. Vision is what the school wants to look like over...[read more]

CM's first Writer in Residence
English and writing classes in grades 7-12 will welcome a new visitor this year in Catholic Memorial's first "writer in residence," Barbara Helfgott-Hyett. An accomplished, award-winning poet and educator, Ms. Helfgott-Hyett will begin conducting monthly workshops next month.
Ms. Helfgott-Hyett has taught at Harvard, MIT, and Boston University, where she won the Sproat Award For Excellence in Teaching. She is a co-founder of The Writer's Room of Boston, Inc, and the director of PoemWorks: The Workshop for Publishing Poets, in Brookline.
In addition to working with students on poetry and writing, Ms. Helfgott-Hyett is looking forward to conducting writing workshops for faculty and parents, judging the school's writing contest and hosting a public reading this year.
"We are excited to have Ms. Helfgott-Hyett join our department," said English chair Vin Catano P'01, "and we look forward to reading and hearing the work our students will produce under her guidance."
