Brian Scott
Vice Principal of Student Affairs

In October, four students returned from the Edmund Rice of North America Student Leadership Workshop (more commonly referred to as the Action Workshop) with an idea.
Inspired by their collaboration with nineteen other schools from North and South America, they came back to Catholic Memorial to address a central question that has gripped schools across the country: what to do about bullying.
Under the guidance of Pat Murray, Director of Students Activities and the BERSI Program, they criticized what they saw as a flawed approach to issues facing adolescents. Namely, they thought that by stressing the problematic behaviors of a few, we ignore the overwhelmingly positive behaviors of the many.
They had my ear. So I invited Brian Murphy, Mike Carroll, Domenic Montalbano, and Mark Woodall and Mr. Murray to discuss a way that we could address these issues by emphasizing the positive behaviors of our many CM Knights.
Their idea was simple: find people who take seriously the values of integrity, honesty and respect, and make them accountable to each other...[read more]

Ronald Claude '12, Distinguished Delegate
Junior Ronald Claude was honored at BC High's Model UN Conference on March 5 with the Distinguished Delegate award, the conference's highest honor.
Claude, who is also a noted performer on the school's forensics team, was given the delegate award for his work on the Legal Committee. Claude led the passage of a resolution and worked diligently to build consensus through the conference. "Ronald's hard work and skill at persuading his peers paid off with his award-winning performance," Model UN coach Vin Bradley said. "Ronald's dogged rhetorial persistence and ability to make a point without demonizing his opponents won him many allies. We're very proud of him." [read more] |

CM Alumni: News and Notes
In February, Stephen Leary '67 and his wife, Patricia, hosted a gathering of CM alumni, students and their parents (pictured below) at their home in Raleigh, NC. Brennan Williams '09 and Dino Cauteruccio '09, who are studying at UNC Chapel Hill, came by. Also pictured are Dominic Cauteruccio '12, Camren Williams '12 and Armani Reeves '12, who paid a visit to the University of North Carolina in their college tour travels.

Mark Kelly '73 has served as a consultant and contractor for roof designs, restorations and preservations projects for over thirty years. He's written about his experiences in "American Roofing: Roofing in America," published in 2010. The book chronicles Kelly's experiences consulting on projects like the Flatiron Building in New York, the Wrigley Building in Chicago and the Fairbanks House in Dedham. Coleman Noonan '07, a star senior forward for St. Anselm's who earned 2nd-team All-American honors last year, was featured in a Boston Herald story this February ("Stars keep eye on brothers"). Coleman won the 2010 Concannon Award, given to the top American-born player in New England Division 2-3.
"You and I both have grown up/That's how it's supposed to be," croons Dan Masterson '08, a junior at Harvard College, in "Castles," his latest single. Dan is currently studying music at Harvard while interning at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge. He's hatching plans to either work at a record label this summer or head to the UK to play some shows after the release of his album, "The Father Time EP."

Thank you from the Parent Council
The CM Parent Council wishes to thank everyone for their support of this winter's Parent Council Social and this past week's "Blues to Bling" Fashion Show.
Both events were a hit! The Snowflake Social in February was a great way for the CM parent community to meet and socialize in an informal setting. And the Fashion Show gave everyone a chance to support CM's annual fund and scholarship program while having a great time at Moseleys.
A special thanks goes out to those parents who helped organize and run the Snowflake Social, and to Nancy Jacob P'14 and her committee for all they did in organizing the Blues to Bling Fashion Show. And thanks to Mrs. Ann Murphy P'03 '05 '08 for serving as MC!
Look for more photos of both events on the CM website's parent homepage soon!

Citizenship and the City
The Middle School Program is taking a serious look at Boston this year.
Through a variety of author and expert lectures and field trips, seventh and eighth graders are getting to know their city while learning about the duties of citizenship. Their studies took the seventh grade to the Museum of Fine Arts last week, where they took an art and architecture workshop after studying that subject in school and in the MFA's new Art of the Americas wing.

The eighth grade, meanwhile, went to City Hall and the Boston Police Department to consider how the forces that govern Boston continue to evolve.
On March 7, students heard from local author Neil Savage, author of Extraordinary Tenure: Massachusetts and the Making of a Nation. Read more...
