The spirit of the season

On behalf of everyone at Catholic Memorial School, we want to wish your family a wonderful Christmas season. As you wrestle with the pressing issues of the Christmas season, like how early is  too early to get the tree and what to get the person who has everything, take a moment and reflect, not on the Christmas season commercialized, but on the incredible irony of the Christmas celebration.

 

A couple of thousand years ago a woman had a baby in essentially a cave next to farm animals. The couple had little money and neither had done anything remarkable. The child himself was born into a world where his pregnant mother was refused shelter. And as the child grew he was ridiculed and beaten by the government and eventually executed, having to carry the instrument of his own torture. These are the events that surround our celebration. Why do we celebrate? Because despite these circumstances, God worked through this family to change the lives of billions of people.

 

God came into the world not through some magical divine apparition but through the choice of a human being - Mary. Approached by the angel Gabriel she could have no idea what God was asking of her...[read more]



NHS organizes annual Blood Drive
 
This past Friday, students and faculty donated over sixty pints of blood to the American Red Cross.  The annual drive, organized by Mr. Rob Croteau '93 and the National Honor Society, is just one way students are involved in generous acts during the holiday season.

Three tournaments in a day for Speech teams

Twenty-one Middle School Program students, along with eight pairs of parent judges and Coach Ellen Eberly, attended the Nashoba Brooks Middle School Speech Competition on December 5.  Almost all who performed felt they did a personal best for at least one of their two rounds of competition.
  Kevin Lynch '15, Paul Sinno '15, Kevin O'Toole '15 and Ryan Nelson '15 (pictured below) earned trophies.



On December 4, the high school speech and debate team attended two tournaments: the Lincoln Sudbury Showdown, where they earned a fourth place team trophy, and George Mason University's 7th Annual Patriot Games in Fairfax, VA...[read more]


Welcome, Ms. Jiang

Ms. Yi Jiang joined the foreign language department this fall.  She is teaching Mandarin Chinese to students in grades eight through twelve. 

Ms. Jiang joins CM through the College Board's Guest Teacher Program which partners with China's Han Ban (Ministry of Culture and Education) to start programs in Mandarin Chinese at high schools throughout the U.S.  This is CM's sixth year in the College Board program.



CM Alumni: News and Notes

Bill Bracket '67 organized his two annual Class of '67 gatherings this fall.  Jim Murphy, Paul Chisholm, John Mackin, Paul Crespi, Joe Flannery, Joe Griffin, Mike Costello, Bob Clark, Jay Brien, John Glancy, Dave Harrison, Gerry Hartigan, Joe Hayes, Mike Savage, Paul Scanlon, Ed Hurley and Bill Brackett attended.  This year Dan Sullivan also joined in for the first time, in September.  "Participation in oth events is not mandatory," Bill says.  "If any other "Boyz of '67" would like to join us in 2011, as we reminisce about Brother Ford, Brother O'Donnell, Brother Conway, Brother Newman and others, contact me at wb449@comcast.net."

Frank Klemas '78 recently ran the Hampton Beach Half Marathon.  Frank finished in 2:19:56 - "not bad for an old geezer!" he says.

Chris Maloney '84, after serving for seven years as the Chief United States Probation Officer in New Jersey, was recently selected as the Chief United States Probation Officer in the District of Massachusetts.  He will return home in January.

Kurtis Buczynski '09 was elected captain of the Framingham State rugby team this year.  Kurtis is still a senator in student government, a  member of Women Empowerment, and a DJ with the university's radio program, WDJM.

Christmas Concert brings glad tidings

CM's eighth grade class put a smile on everyone's face as they took to the altar at Holy Name Church on December 7 for the annual Christmas Concert.

Along with talents from the high school's jazz band, chamber ensemble, choir and alumni musicians, director Mr. Spaner gave the audience plenty to enjoy and reflect upon in the Christmas season.  See more photos.


Business Club starts year on Fidelity's Trading Floor

When he's older, Victor Rho '11 hopes to found and manage his own Fortune 500 company.  He's gotten his start by founding CM's Business Club, which took its first field trip on December 7 to Fidelity's trading headquarters in Boston. 



The club, which has attracted over twenty members to its first few meetings, got a personal tour of the trading floor with Fidelity research specialist Patrick Torbert.  They then met trader David Mulvany and former Magellan Fund manager Bob Stansky, who now oversees managers of several Fidelity funds. 


"The responsibility is now on you to get better educated and apply yourselves," Stansky told club members.  "Be curious, inquisitive, and honest..." [read more]

Picturing America Contest Deadline: December 15

Prominent alumni
authors Michael Connelly '82, Richard Lyons '69 and William Martin '68 will judge CM's third annual Picturing America Writing Contest this winter.  The contest, whose deadline is midnight on December 15, invites students to respond to two American photographs, both of which are in the library thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Students can respond with poetry, fiction or non-fiction.  Non-fiction judge Michael Connelly is most recently the author of Rebound: Baseball, Busing, Larry Bird and the Rebirth of Boston.  Poetry judge Richard Lyons is the author of Fleur Carnivore, which won the 2005 Washington Prize for Poetry.  Fiction judge William Martin is the author of Back Bay, Harvard Yard and, most recently, City of Dreams.   Click here to download complete contest rules.

The sixth Catholic Memorial Hall of Fame ceremony took place on Friday, November 26 at Moseley's on the Charles in Dedham.  Click here to view a gallery of the honorees from this year, as well as all Hall of Fame honorees.


Varsity basketball opened its season on Dec. 11 with an 83-71 win over Tiverton.  Varsity hockey opened the season facing La Salle (RI) on Dec. 14.  The Knights fell, 6-3.  Varsity swimming begins its season on Dec. 21 against BC High.



Varsity wrestling's season began on Dec. 11 with wins over Josiah Quincy and Cambridge, and the Varsity track team opened its season as well that day with a duel meet against Xaverian.  Winning individual events were
Dennis Muldoon '12 (1-mile), Ryan Malone '11 (high jump), Joe Isaksen '11 (shot-put), Josh Charles '12 (55m hurdles), Donovan Henry '12 (55m) and the 4x400-meter relay team of Henry, Muldoon, Todd MacDonald '12 and Owen Carrel '11.
