From the President's Office

Dear Catholic Memorial Parents,

I write to tell you about two new initiatives we will be launching this year regarding Catholic Memorial's curricular and co-curricular programs.   Before I do so, however, let me provide some background.

Paul E. Sheff '62, President
In October of 2007 Catholic Memorial joyfully celebrated the 50th anniversary of its founding.  Our alumni and friends who attended that celebration in the main ballroom of the Copley Place Marriott were justly proud of what we had accomplished, but they also began to cast an eye toward our future.  That Catholic Memorial would mark its 100th anniversary fifty years hence was not guaranteed.   How would the school adapt to changing times and changing circumstances, they wondered?   What would our school look like?

I turned my attention to these questions soon after arriving at Catholic Memorial as the eleventh head of school.   I was convinced that if we were to have a future, we needed to describe what it might look like, and then ensure it became an integral part of our curricular and co-curricular programs.  Without a vision, there may be no future.

For the past two years I have challenged our faculty, our Board - indeed, anyone who would listen - to help me create a vision for what our school might look like over the next 5-7 years.   Initially our efforts were devoted to exploring options - ideas around which we could build a future.  As we progressed we homed in on two that emerged as front-runners: global education and public speaking.   Two separate committees were formed, one chaired by Naomi Lockwood (global education) and the other by Br. Anthony Cavet (public speaking), to study these topics and make recommendations.   In early June they presented their final reports.

Ready, Set, High School!

The Class of 2014 began its high school career by setting some high goals for itself at the overnight freshman retreat in Becket, MA on August 31.

The two-day retreat, organized by Vice Principal of Student Life Brian Scott and Director of Campus Ministry Leah Ramsdell, took students far from Catholic Memorial School, but with the able leadership from upperclassmen and faculty, they better discovered what CM's high school experience will offer them.

Click on the image above to watch CMTV's video of the retreat.

"We're getting to know everybody before school starts--everybody's personalities, and what their skills are," said Michael Tomaino '14.  "For people who don't know each other--this is the first day we've met all of our new classmates, we've all worked together really well." [read more]

Juniors hit the ground running on "Judgment Day"

Hoisting hundred-pound logs, carrying a classmate on his shoulders for a hundred yards, and doing an interminable amount of push-ups Thursday morning sounded like a good first day of school this year for Christopher Ryan '12.

That wasn't so for many of his classmates, but Ryan, along with several other vocal leaders in the class, inspired everyone to push a little harder and give "one more" as the junior class reckoned with "Judgment Day."

Organized by Vice Principal of Student Life Brian Scott, the guidance department and motivational firm The Program, "Judgment Day" aims to challenge students physically and mentally through a day of intense...[read more]

Register today for the 24th CM Golf Tournament

The 24th Annual Catholic Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Walpole Country Club.  The tournament will, once again, be sponsored by Cooley Manion Jones LLP.  We thank them for their continued support of the young men of Catholic Memorial.

This year's tournament will take on a special meaning as we honor Joe Perfetti who retired from CM in June 2010 after 38 years of teaching.
Joe began his career at CM in 1972 and since then he has taught over 3,800 young men in courses like AP Calculus, Discrete Math, and Math Analysis.  In the words of Paul Sheff '62, President, "You simply cannot replace Joe Perfetti and people like him, who have so clearly shaped our school and who have had such a positive effect on our boys..." Leadership by example: The 2010 Student Leadership Dinner

Student Activities Director Patrick Murray recalled the lessons learned from the tragic Phoebe Prince story as he encouraged CM's student leaders to be more positive and sensitive role-models for their peers this year.

Murray's remarks, which opened the school's 6th Annual Student Leadership Dinner, pointed to the positive outcomes across the state that came out of that tragedy.

As captains, elected representatives and club leaders invited to the dinner, those in attendance were encouraged to also look out for signs of bullying in their student organizations, and to become models of positive thinking and encouragement...[read more]
