Guidance Update

The Advanced Placement results have arrived.  They are some of the best scores ever! That comes from serious students diligently applying themselves under the tutelage of master teachers.

For the uninitiated, Advanced Placement (AP) courses are officially certified by the College Board. The curricula must meet stringent standards verifying that the workload is equal to a semester course in college. The scores determine possible college credit for successful completion. All our AP teachers and their curricula have been officially approved by the College Board. CM now offers AP courses in English Literature, Calculus, European History, U.S. History, Studio Art, French, Latin Vergil, Chinese, and Biology.

This year, sixty-nine students, mostly juniors and seniors, took a total of 111 AP exams. Scores are rated 1-5 with scores of 3, 4, and 5 eligible for college credit. An amazing sixty-six percent of our test takers scored within that category, and 21 scored a perfect five!  

Transcript requests: Almost every day during the summer, the guidance department fields requests for alumni transcripts. Some are for recent grads that might be transferring from one college to another, some are for new jobs and promotions, and some are for older grads who might be returning to college for retraining.

Summer School outside the classroom walls

Since 2003, CM's summer school offerings have included more than just remedial work for students who need to catch up. 

This summer was no exception: the Summer Enrichment Program, in its fourth year of operation, is helping talented incoming and current students get ready for the rigors of high school and enjoy the summer with their classmates.



That was the case on July 9, when the program, headed by Mr. Murray and Mr. Boyle, headed to the Franklin Park Zoo for one final field trip with the first session's fourteen students.

Kevin J. Malone '63 is working as a guidance counselor at Paramus Catholic High School in Paramus, NJ.

Michael Costello '67
retired from PricewaterhouseCoopers on June 30.  In recent years, he served as managing partner for Boston of the worldwide accounting firm.



Ray Darcy '70
hosted a group from the 1970 & '71 hockey teams at Walpole Country Club in June. (L-R) Former faculty member Chris Jackson, Richard Wright '71, Tom McIsaac '71, Charley O'Brien '71, Ray Darcy '70,  Zeke Doyle '70 and Bob Quirk '71.

After nearly a 30 year career with the Vermont State Police, and a short stint with JetBlue Airways, Bill O'Leary '75 has accepted a position with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in Washington, DC. He is now the National Program Manager for NHTSA's Impaired Driving Programs.

Tom Budreika '78 reports that he's been employed with the Department of Defense for 25 years, and is looking forward to traveling with his wife Linda.  They have two children.  "Love those Red Sox!" he writes.

John P. Sweeney '87 celebrated his 5-year wedding anniversary with Laurie DiBacco Sweeney on April 23, 2010.



Michael Flynn '96 was proud to welcome Bridget Catherine to the world on June 7, 2010. Bridget is pictured above with "big" sister Mackenzie.

Joe Cauteruccio '06 recently graduated from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, and will shortly begin work at an economics consulting company in Cambridge, MA called Industrial Economics, Inc.

Robert Schaetzl '08 is in his third year at Catholic University, where he made the Dean's List last term.

Keshaudas Spence '10 was named the Offensive MVP for the South at the 32nd annual Shriners All-Star Football Classic on June 18.  In the game, held at Gillette Stadium, Spence carried the ball 13 times for a total of 82 yards.

The 24th Annual Catholic Memorial Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, September 27, 2010 at the Walpole Country Club.  This year's tournament will take on a special meaning as we honor Joe Perfetti who retired from CM in June 2010 after 38 years of teaching.  Click here to read more and for information on registering.

Solidarity in Lima, Peru

BERSI adviser Patrick Murray and a group of fourteen students spent part of their summer on outreach to the Christian Brothers missions in Lima, Peru.  Through the week of June 20, they traveled to Lima and the surrounding areas of Peru, working in schools and community centers organized by the Edmund Rice Christian Brothers and other religious orders.




They learned native music and dance at evening arts performances.  They worked with students in three schools in Lima, Canto Grande and Villa El Salvador.  And they visited health care clinics treating the destitute and abandoned, witnessing the work of religious orders and laiety doing important and necessary work...[read more]

Seeking home-stay families

CCN, the company that has been helping to bring international students to CM for the past six years is looking for one or two safe, nurturing homes for the international students who will be attending Catholic Memorial School in the fall of 2010.

Home-stay arrangements are designed to give international students the experience of American family life. Host families will be compensated $1000 per month per student. John Gorman '11, Boston Globe and Boston Herald All-Scholastic:
"
The Catholic Conference MVP, Gorman hit .395 with three homers and 25 RBI for the league champs. As the team's ace, he went 8-0 with a 1.18 ERA, striking out 113 in 65 innings. He hopes to attend Boston College and also captains the football team."  (Globe)
