Mass General Hospital will honor the students and administration of Catholic Memorial School on June 2 as one of this year's "The 100."

The annual recognition given by MGH since 2008 is designed to honor "one hundred individuals and groups whose diligence and discoveries, philanthropy and passion have helped advance the fight against cancer."

In CM's case, MGH will pay tribute to the school for its five-year involvement in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Walk, held each October on the Boston esplanade...[read more]

Dyson wins Gold Key from Scholastic and Boston Globe

Dyson's work (pictured below), one of four CM students' artwork earning honors with the Boston Globe Scholastic Art Awards, will be on display at Boston's Museum of Transportation for the month.   His work, titled "Measurement of Man," looked so precise and professional that art teacher Ann Malachowski had trouble believing he had completed the entire project himself...

Along with Dyson '12, Philip Hong '11, James Donovan '10 and Mike Larocque '10 earned honorable mention.  All four students were honored at a Boston Globe hosted ceremony over February vacation...[read more]

Behind the Iron Curtain: BERSI in Eastern Europe

"Standing at 'Checkpoint Charlie' and the remnants of the Berlin Wall, brought me back in time to a world that I thought never existed, or that I never appreciated."  So wrote Michael Gallagher '11, one of the thirty-two students on this February's BERSI trip to Eastern Europe, in his reflections afterward.

Joined by Director of Campus Ministry and theology chair Brian Scott and theology teachers William Hahn and Tim Lewis, the group visited Munich, Krakow, Prague and Berlin.

Gallagher continued: "Prior to my visit, the Berlin Wall was just a wall, and nothing more.  But I learned that the magnitude of despair there was much greater than what I would have imagined before visiting it..." [read more]

Campus Ministry focuses Missions Collections on Spirit Week, Lent

This year, CM's homeroom collection for the Missions is taking place only during Lent, and this week, students can dress down for a $10 donation to the missions.  Here, CM's communications director Mr. McGonegal reflects on where our missions money goes.

Let me tell you about the men who receive our missions money.

They are men like Br. James Glos, Br. Richard Glatz, and Br. Michael O'Donnell.  They're Edmund Rice Christian Brothers who work in the poorest neighborhoods of Lima, Arequipa, Chimbote and Moyobambo, Peru.

It's been great getting to know these men through the past two BERSI student trips to Peru.  Last June, Ms. Hamilton and I took twelve students to Canto Grande, where CM's "sister school" is.

Before I left, I asked Brother Glos how I should bring the missions money to him.  "Cash," he said.

Needless to say, I was worried to act as the courier of a four-figure sum of money through the streets of Lima, where thousands of people in great need would probably like to get their hands on it...[read more]

Drama Club takes Macbeth to Mass Drama Fest

In just thirty-nine minutes and forty-one seconds, the CM Drama Club performed an entire Shakespeare play last Saturday morning.

Although their production of Macbeth, CM's submission to this year's Massachusetts High School Drama Festival competition at Sharon High School, did not get selected to move on in competition this spring, the premiere of it was a feat worth seeing, if only to watch Jon Lott '10 connive as Lady Macbeth, Brendan MacNabb '10 scream bloody murder, and a supporting cast finesse their way through Shakesepearean English in front of hundreds of their peers.

NEH sponsors CM librarian at national conference

After successfully organizing three creative writing contests at CM in the past year, CM librarian Ann Magyar was invited to New York City on March 3 as one of seventy librarians nationwide to participate in the National Endowment for the Humanities' "Picturing America in our Nation's Libraries" conference.

Delegates at the NEH's conference also participated in the "Celebration of Teaching and Learning" conference sponsored by New York's PBS affiliate for the following two days.  There, Queen Noor of Jordan spoke on the impact of international consciousness, while U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan addressed delegates on the Obama administration's education agenda...[read more]

From the Athletics Department

Congratulations to Ed Colvin '10, CM track captain, who competed in the Nike National Indoor Track Championships on March 12.  Colvin came in 13th place in the 5000-meter event.  The week before, Colvin and Donovan Henry '12 both competed at the New England championships.

Spring Sports (Baseball, Lacrosse, Rugby, Tennis, Track and Volleyball) begin with tryouts during the week of March 15.  All physicals should be on file with the Athletics office.

From the Friends of CM Athletics: It has been brought to our attention that there has been some confusion as to the letters recently sent out to parents and businesses requesting donations for Ads and Parent Messages for the Senior Athletic Night Awards Ad Book, as well as donations to the 4th Annual May Calendar Drawing.

For the past 23 years we have contacted local businesses regarding placing Ads in the Athletic Awards Book...[read more]
