Forensics Team: 6th in Philly
Catholic Memorial
School's speech and debate team traveled
to Philadelphia on November 21 to compete in the
annual Villiger Speech and Debate Tournament at St. Joseph's University. The team came in 6th place out of 62 schools competing.
At that tournament, sophomore Jhovani Vonleh
of Sharon earned
a 2nd place trophy in the category of declamation, while Kevin Donnelly '12 earned a 3rd place trophy. Pat Simas '10 (Dramatic Interp) and Andrew Rogantino '11 (Declamation) made the semifinals, while Eric Butts '10 and Tom
Foley '12, and Pat Simas 10 and Ethan Madden '11 made the quarterfinals in duo.

NHS welcomes its newest members
CM inducted its newest class of
National Honor Society members on November 19 in the Ronald Perry
Gymnasium. To help inspire the newest inductees, Peter Trovato '00,
who earlier in the month earned the first Vince in Bono Malum Award for
Outstanding Young Alumnus, gave the keynote address.
Trovato, founder of the Massachusetts Soldiers Legacy Fund, spoke of
his years at CM a decade earlier, and of his most poignant memories as

Christmas Deals at the CM Bookstore Sale - December 13
The CM Bookstore will hold its annual Christmas Bookstore sale on Sunday, December 13 from 10am - 2pm in the CM Lobby.
For those who cannot make the sale, the Bookstore will be open the week
of December 14-18 from 2:20-3:30 for last minute purchases.

CM Alumni: News and Notes
Over a hundred alumni and guests
gathered for an alumni reception prior to the 48th Annual "Turkey Bowl"
game on Thanksgiving morning, November 26. Below, CM President Paul Sheff '62 chatted with class of '71 alums Jack Corcoran and Br. Paul Hannon.

Michael Connelly '82 announced the publication of his latest book, The
President's Team: The 1963 Army-Navy Game and the Assassination of JFK,
at a book release party and signing at the Hotel Commonwealth on
November 18.
Michael McColgan '89 will be returning to his hometown on December 19th and 20 with his band Street Dogs. He encourages classmates and alums to come see him perform at the Paradise Theater on Commonwealth Avenue.
David McCoy '08, currently a sophomore at Brandeis University, was
named an honorable mention All-UAA honoree for his performance in the
fall season playing for Brandeis men's soccer team.
Washington, DC Alumni came togetheron Monday evening,
November 16 for an annual reception to meet, network and reminisce.

CM Middle School Program Fall Dance this Friday
The CM Middle School Program's Fall Dance will take place this Friday, December 4 from 7-10pm. Tickets will be available in
the main office after school all week.
Only CM boys are
allowed to the dance, but girls from all schools are invited. All students will
be required to show a valid school ID when buying tickets, and on Friday
night to be admitted inside the dance. Tickets will be
sold Friday night, but only 300 girls will be allowed in, so buy them as
early as possible! Tickets are $10 each. Please contact Mr. Murray if you have any questions.

CM Parent Council's Holiday Events
Christmas Concert
Catholic
Memorial School's annual Christmas concert will take place on Wednesday,
December 9 at 7pm at Holy Name Church.
The concert will include traditional favorites performed by the eighth grade
chorus, accompanied by solo performances from high school singers.
The CM Jazz Band will perform as will the school's chamber orchestra. Mr.
Craig Spaner, chair of the Fine Arts department at CM,
will conduct the choir and musicians.
The concert is free and open to the public.
Christmas Breakfast
For the past several years the Parent Council has held a coffee for parents to get together and meet each other in an informal setting. If has been a great success and we would like it to become an annual event. Please join us on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 7:30am in the Resource Room at the Middle School building.

Poet laureate, bestselling author to judge CM Writing Contest
Boston's poet laureate, Sam Cornish, will judge the poetry entries in this winter's CM Picturing America Writing Contest. Author of several books of verse, Cornish was appointed in 2008 as the city's first ambassador of poetry.
In addition to Cornish, bestselling author William Martin '68, author of Harvard Yard and Lost Constitution, will return for a second year to judge the fiction category. His classmate, Charles Kenney '68, author of The Presidential Portfolio and Rescue Men, will judge the non-fiction category.

This year's annual Christmas Gift Drive will take place from December 7-16. Thank you in advance for your generosity.
NHS Blood Drive
The National Honor Society and the American Red Cross will hold the
first of two blood drives on December 11, 2009 in the gym at Catholic
Memorial. Any student intending to donate blood should be aware of the

BERSI Applications Now Available
Destinations in Asia, South and Central
America, and Europe are among the possible sites students in grades
7-12 can visit in this year's BERSI travel immersion program.

Students can choose from El Salvador, Peru, South Korea, Eastern Europe
and Puerto Rico. New this year is the Eastern Europe trip, which will
bring students to Prague and Berlin. This year marks the 5th BERSI

From the Athletics Department
The winter sports season got underway on Monday, November 30.
Congratulations to Frank Wheeler-Larusso '10, who signed his letter of intent to Fairfield University in a brief ceremony on November 23. Wheeler-Larusso will play lacrosse at Fairfield.
Wheeler-Larusso,
who has played varsity lacrosse and soccer in his years as a Knight,
signed the letter of intent in the company of head lacrosse coach Brian
Scott, his father Jeff Larusso (pictured above), and CM athletics director Alex Campea.
The Turkey Bowl trophy will remain at BC High for another year after the Knights fell, 28-17, on Thanksgiving Day. Thanks to coach Alex
Campea and his staff--coaches Bob Currier, Rob McIntosh, Brent Williams, Brian
McCray, and Pat Murphy, for a solid season.
Thanks also to athletics assistant Sue Sullivan and to all the parents, faculty, staff and volunteers who made game day an enjoyable one for all.
