The Catholic Memorial "High School Challenge"
CM's success in raising over $50,000 in the past several years for breast cancer research is due in large part to the devoted parents, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the school who have supported this cause.
For two years, Kevin Gill '13 and his friends from other schools had participated in the Making Strides Walk. Kevin had a personal motive: his grandmother had died of cancer when he was in the first grade. "I wasn't able to be there for her," he said. "But when I heard about the Walk, I wanted to try and help."
Kevin had previously challenged his friends to raise more money than he did in past Walks. Last year, he approached Mr. Brian Scott, Director of Campus Miinistry, and suggested that the entire school community do that in a more formal way.
Mr. Scott thought it was a great idea, and worked with the American Cancer Society to develop the Catholic Memorial "High School Challenge." CM has asked every other school in Massachusetts to match its efforts in student body participation.
As of September 15, 20 schools and over 500 students had taken up the challenge, including Ursuline High School, where CM President Paul Sheff extended a personal challenge to Ursuline president Rosann Whiting. Though in "competition" with each other, together all these schools will help defeat breast cancer on October 4.

Dear CM Parents, Alumni and Friends,
Thanks
to your support, we are well on our way to our goal of raising $30,000
to support this year's Making Strides Walk. Thank you for your help
and support.
This Sunday, over 300 students, faculty and staff from CM will once again form a "sea of red" along the Charles River Esplanade. Students will board buses at 7:30am on Sunday morning for the Walk, and return to CM at approximately 12:30pm.
You can visit the American Cancer Society's High School Challenge here to show your support for the cause and join our team. Too many of us, unfortunately, have known someone affected by this disease. But it is a great sign of hope to know that we come together for those affected, for each other, and for a cure on October 4.
"The Making Strides Walk is a great opportunity for CM," says President Paul E. Sheff '62, who has personally pledged $1 for every CM walker. "It is in line
with our school's mission and the mission of the Christian Brothers.
It connects our students, in a visceral way, to something that may
never affect them but will affect someone they know. And it teaches
the lesson of generosity--committing one's time and financial efforts
to a cause."
After
four years of making this event one of our major fundraisers of the
year, this year CM issued the first ever "High School Challenge" to
every other school
in the state, asking them to match CM in dollars raised or
participation. At CM this month, you can see posters,
t-shirts and sign-up tables for our students as many young men have
taken a personal interest in supporting this cause.
Best wishes,
Brian Scott Director of Campus Ministry

CM's Soccer Team "Goes Pink"
|
On Wednesday, September 23, the CM Soccer team showed their support for the cause of breast cancer research and helped raise funds for this year's Making Strides Walk by using pink soccer balls in their home game against BC High. "Tonight was a great success for the cause, and we were glad to help in any little way we could," said Mr. John Finn '88, head soccer coach.
While the team played, American Cancer Society representative Lauren Barrett worked with peer ministers as they planned the Walk and recruited fans and friends to join the cause October 4.

CMTV: On Air with Ursuline High
|
On Thursday, September 24, Ursuline High School student leaders paid CM a visit to respond personally to the Catholic Memorial "High School Challenge" and invite even more students to join them at the Making Strides Walk on October 4.
Kiki Shea and Colleen McGauley, two juniors at Ursuline High School, appeared with CMTV co-hosts Matt Farrell '11 and Connor Lynch '10 to solicit the student body's help in supporting this cause.
"We're
really excited for this event and we hope to get as many girls from
Ursuline and as many boys from CM to make this event successful," said
Shea, "and we know it's going to be a lot of fun."
Students in every homeroom were greeted by a new sight as they turned on CMTV that morning. But there will be a lot more girls from Ursuline and girls and boys from other sponsoring schools joining them at the Walk on Sunday morning.
