Small Steps, Big Strides
ACS Making Strides Walk Partners with CM for the "Catholic Memorial Challenge"

Pictured above: On August 5, CM juniors Chris Stathopoulos and Peter White attended the Walk Kickoff Breakfast as representatives of CM's Pacesetter team.  There they met Mark McNally '08 (Northeastern U. '12), center, who organized CM's first team in 2005.  Read more about the breakfast.

Organizers of the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk have watched Catholic Memorial School's presence on the Boston Esplanade grow to a "sea of red" in the past several years.  Hundreds of Catholic Memorial students have joined in on what has become a rite of fall: raising funds and walking in solidarity with those afflicted or affected by breast cancer.

CM became an official "pacesetter" for a second year in a row in 2008, thanks to the organizational efforts of students, parents, Campus Ministry and the school administration.  After such success, the American Cancer Society worked with Director of Campus Ministry Brian Scott and President Paul Sheff '62 to issue the "Catholic Memorial Challenge" to all schools across Massachusetts.

The Challenge urges schools to join CM on Sunday, October 4 at the Hatchshell on the Charles River for the Walk and to recruit at least 20% of their student bodies to participate.  Last year, over 40% of the CM community participated, raising nearly $30,000.

"Although the Catholic Memorial Challenge is a competition," said CM President Paul E. Sheff '62, "our ultimate goal is to save lives - the lives of far too many women who are struggling with breast cancer.  We march to heighten awareness about this terrible disease, and to raise money for its cure."

Visit the Catholic Memorial Challenge--students and parents can join the CM team and help make a difference whether they walk or not.  Five schools, including Ursuline High, have already signed up to compete with CM.

From the President's Office

Dear Catholic Memorial Parents,

In January I wrote to notify you that Catholic Memorial would be increasing its tuition by $650, which represents 5.3% over
the previous year's charge.   My letter acknowledged the difficult economic circumstances that our country was facing, and that many of our families were stretched thin financially.  I proposed that in raising tuition we would be able to "maintain the high level of educational services our current students enjoy and, at the same time, incorporate some strategic changes."

In March, because of worsening unemployment and continued declines in the market, we felt a need to trim expenses as well.  Consequently, we reduced our costs by approximately 5%, mainly in areas having little or no impact on program.

Today I write to let you know that, through a combination of the tuition hike and an expense reduction, we open this year in very good shape.  Everything that makes Catholic Memorial special - curricular, co-curricular, and extra-curricular programs - remains in place.

The changes your sons will notice are all positive.  The hallways and stairs in the high school have been completely redone.  Same for the locker room beneath the gymnasium: the walls have been painted, a new flooring has been installed, and brand new lockers are in place.  We have moved more technology into the classrooms and will soon have hired a second full-time person to support that technology.   We have expanded the school's footprint by purchasing an adjacent property and removing the apartment building that was standing on this lot to make way for expanded parking.  And the brickwork on the back of the high school and the former monastery has been re-pointed - a nice cosmetic upgrade.

I am proud of what we have been able to accomplish because of the sacrifices of our parents, and everyone who is employed at Catholic Memorial - faculty, administrators, and staff.  Pulling together out of love for our school and the welfare of our boys, we find ourselves in a good position, excited and eager for a very good new academic year.

Thank you for all your support.  I look forward to talking with you as we intersect this year at school events.

Sincerely yours,

Paul E. Sheff

Beyond BERSI: Service that Continues

Seniors Michael Murphy and Brendan Maciejko took a lot of memories home from their BERSI trip to El Salvador in February. But thanks to their efforts locally with Boy Scouts Troop 5 in West Roxbury, they left a lot there, too.  The Scout troop in Zaragoza, El Salvador, where the young men visited during their one-week BERSI immersion project, received several dufflebags full of camping, first aid, and other supplies from Murphy, Maciejko, and the other eight students who joined Mr. Murray in February.

In mid-July, Murphy and Maciejko saw to it that the last of the 600-lbs. of camping gear they had initially collected for donations made its way to El Salvador.  Thanks to Pilot Air Freight Corp. in East Boston, the last 200-lbs. of gear made its way to El Salvador this summer, just in time for Troop 38 in Zaragoza to use it.  Pictured above, l-r, are Murphy, Pilot Air General Manager John McDonough, and Maciejko.
