CM Poets and Writers: Picturing America

The Catholic Memorial Picturing America Writing Contest concluded on Tuesday afternoon in the CM Board Room with an awards ceremony honoring some of CM's top writers.  On hand were judges Michael Connelly '82, author of 26 Miles to Boston and Rebound: Basketball, Busing, Larry Bird and the Rebirth of Boston (non-fiction), as well as faculty member Craig Spaner (poetry) and faculty member Joe McGonegal (fiction).

Celebrity alumni author Michael Connelly '82, whose next book will focus on the 1963 Navy football team, praised the winners' insights and creativity.  "Writing was always a passion of mine," said Connelly.  "And the power of writing, in this day and age, and the value of writing...has slid in a lot of people's lives."

The Class 0f 2009

They left their families as boys on that first day at Catholic Memorial School, and they graduated last Thursday as young men.  Throughout their years at CM, members of the 49th graduating class continued to shape and expand their notion of being a part of a family.  That was evident in the speeches they heard at last Thursday's commencement at Holy Name Church.

Sabina and Murphy '09: One last duo performance at Nationals

Greg Sabina '09 and Brian Murphy '09 may have graduated last Thursday night, but their work for the Forensics team continued through the weekend.  The seniors' duo interpretation of "Julia," a dramatic play by Virginia Coates, advanced them to the quarterfinals of the National Catholic Forensics League Grand Tournament held in Albany, New York on May 23.  Although they did not advance beyond the quarterfinals, they were recognized as one of the top duos in the country.

And they were not alone.  Dominic Montalbano '11 and Marcus Jackson '12 competed their way into the octo-final round in the category of Declamation, and Sean Steinberg '10 earned a place in the octo-finals in the category of Original Oratory.

CM Baseball makes South Sectional Finals

The Baseball team, under Coach Hal Carey '96, gave CM a lot to be proud of into the postseason this month, defeating Franklin, Walpole and Bridgewater-Raynham on its way to the South Sectional Finals.  With outstanding pitching talent from the likes of Phil Rossi '09, Matt Goreham '11 and John Gorman '11, the team won the praise of Boston Globe and Boston Herald columnists as it headed into a close matchup against BC High on June 6.  It took extra innings for the Eagles to finally get the better of the team and win, 7-6.

Nahed Lakkis '09 runs one more mile for CM.  According to his coaches, it's likely that Lakkis competed in more varsity events in a CM uniform than any other athlete in school history.  (Photo: Terry Bleiler)

The Lacrosse team earned a postseason berth as well and faced Masconoment in the first round on May 26.  Congratulations to Coach Brian Scott and his team for a great season.
