Forty years ago, Sesame Street's Kermit the Frog may have been more prophetic than he imagined. While it can be hard to be green in today's economy, we consider it essential for our customers, employees and the environ- ment that Nor'east Cleaners is truly GREEN.

    Our company's transition to becoming a 100% green business began ten years ago with the installation of the first Miele Wet Cleaning system in New England through which 40% of our work could be processed effectively. Using Miele's innovative washing and drying protocols, we significantly reduced our use of the traditional dry cleaning solution called perchorethylene.

    In the years since, we have expanded our environmental commitment, launching a comprehensive recycling program and significantly reducing our carbon footprint. Now we've engaged in a once-in-a-lifetime breakthrough in the dry cleaning industry. It's a non-toxic, non-hazardous dry cleaning solution that performs better than perchorethylene, and is completely safe for our employees, our customers, and the environment.

    Like many breakthroughs, the discovery of the cleaning properties of this solution - Solvon K4 - was a happy coincidence. The German company Kreussler, our supplier of the ecologically responsive detergents for our Miele wet cleaning system, found that a class of chemicals called Acetals,  used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and household

    Interestingly, the chemical itself is part of the
same process that allows trees to grow, sugars to form, and puts flavoring in many foods.This may sound too good to be true, and in part, it is. In order to utilize Solvon K4, we had to purchase special equipment, pictured here. While the cost of this equipment was high, the importance of our business being 100% green makes this an urgent investment of enduring value. With the help of Bank Gloucester, our decision to invest was made without hesitation.

    This new cleaning process is already in great demand throughout the US, and we are fortunate to be one of the first dry cleaners in the country to convert to this technology. While many companies claim their operations are "green," Nor'east Cleaners IS 100% GREEN.
