Washington Youth Tour2011 WYT Cover

As summer winds down, memories still linger for six local teens that had the opportunity to experience a once in a lifetime trip.

From June 9-16, Maggie Crow and Kailin Melish of Chapel Hill High School, Mercedes Anderson of Westlake High School, Whitney Hobbs of Alexander High School, Chris Kennard of North Paulding High School and Christal McCamy of Harvester Christian Academy were among Georgia's brightest high school students sent on the Washington Youth Tour, a leadership program sponsored by the electric membership cooperatives (EMCs) in Georgia, including GreyStone Power.

They joined more than 1,500 premier students from 44 states for the week-long educational experience. The 2011 delegates followed an esteemed group of recent WYT alumni who have graduated as valedictorians, salutatorians and STAR students.

Back to School

Hard to believe that the summer is almost over and it is time for school again. As the children jeer, the parents cheer for life as they once knew it can return to a quiet and peaceful state.

Parents, this is an opportunity for you to take back the control of your energy usage! Think about it... without the children at home all the time, you can reacclimate your body tback to schoolo a comfortable 78 degrees within the house; the television and video games will not be on constant play mode; and the refrigerator door will no longer revolve. That alone should help reduce your monthly bills!

Take it a step further and spend some of your new found time preparing your house for the colder months. By doing a little at a time, it will seem as though you have hardly done anything at all. Re-apply weather stripping to your upstairs windows one week, and the basement windows the next; change out a few incandescent lightbulbs to CFLs after lunch, then go take a nap; fill up your dishwasher, but wait until the evening to turn it on, then have the children put up all the dishes. See how it works? Do a little, save a lot!

Annual Meeting celebrates 75th Anniversary

For many of us, it's hard to imagine a life without electricity. We live in a technological world where so many of our daily functions depend upon the need for power. 75th logo tan

This year, as we celebrate our 75th year, we would like to take a moment to say thank YOU! It has been our pleasure to Light the Way into your homes and businesses over these past 75 years.

Our lives were forever changed in 1936 when five men met at the Douglas County Courthouse and formed the Farmers Electrical Association, a non-profit cooperative association that is today GreyStone Power.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, you will have the opportunity to celebrate with us at the 74th Annual Meeting of Members! We have a special Annual Meeting Pic 10treat in store as we mix things up a bit in honor of the anniversary. Chick-fil-A biscuits will be served from 8 - 10 a.m., WSB will broadcast live from 6 a.m. - 1 p.m. with the Walter Reeves Garden Show and the Herb Emory NASCAR show, and there will be more rides for the kids. The Energy Efficiency Expo was such a hit last year and will be returning this year in addition to the Health Fair. A lucky winner will drive home happy in a brand new car donated by Thornton Hyundai and someone will go home wearing new diamond jewelry donated in honor of the anniversary by D. Geller and Sons! If I were you, I would mark this date on my calendar and come!

Visit our commemorative website to learn more about our history and some fun facts.

We have created a special website in honor of our anniversary. We would love for you to take a moment to visit the site where you can learn more about our history, find out some cool fun facts, quiz yourself on your knowledge and scroll through some really great pictures. To view the site, click on the link below.

Where do you work?

Restaurant workers

Man-oh-man have the calls been coming in this month for the Co-op Connections Card! Our recent mailing of the GreyStone Report listing all of the businesses participating in the program has really piqued some interest among you guys!

Now that so many of you are interested and learning more about our discount program, have you stopped to ask yourself why your place of work is not on the list? It is SO easy to join!

Do you work at a local restaurant that serves great food? Are you a retailer? Do you work in the automotive, housing or entertainment industry? Business professionals, you may have something to offer too! Why doesn't your business get connected?

Here's how it works: Have the owner/manager give us a call to request a packet. We will answer any of their questions and put the information in the mail. Once received, the owner/manager will complete the contract and either fax or mail back to us. We will then list the new discount in our publication and on the web site. Every time a member presents the card, the business will give them the discount. It is important that all employees know about this program.

Is there a cost? NO! The only cost for the business will be the actual discount that is offered to our members. All we require is that the discount be specifically different for our members. This means you cannot run an ad in the paper offering the same discount or offer another company or organization the same offer.

Here's what the business will get in return for joining: FREE advertisement! As new businesses join, they will be highlighted in our newsletter (The GreyStone Report [bill insert], Members Matter [in Georgia Magazine] and E-Link). Each business will also be listed on our Co-op Connections website.

With over 103,000 members, your business has the opportunity to reach many new customers. See how easy that is?

Learn more about the Co-op Connections program and the many different ways you can save personally. You can also get a current listing of businesses by visiting connections.coop/greystonepower. You can also call to request a card at 770-370-2436, or to print your own card, visit connections.coop/pharmacy.php.
