Paint Chip Sampling
29 February 2012
by Francis Xavier Finigan

On October 5, 2011 the RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting) Rule was amended. Under the amendment s EPA will now allow Certified Renovators to obtain paint chip samples. Paint chip samples must be analyzed at an EPA approved laboratory. The lab will use atomic absorption to analyze the paint samples for concentrations of lead. This methodology renders highly accurate results.

Paint chip sampling is a destructive testing method. It will produce small quantities of lead dust and debris, proper precautions must be taken.

Solar Decathlon Department of Energy
Competition:  Shadow a building project - want to help?

"My name is Bree Baccaglini and I am a student at Middlebury College. After our success in the 2011 Solar Decathlon Department of Energy Competition, we are beginning a new on a sustainable building project for the 2013 competition. This entails designing and executing a residential home in a 22-month push, with the bulk of the building effort taking place April-August of 2013.

Before we begin the actual construction effort, members of the construction team--myself included--want to get on-site exposure in order to better understand the processes and materials used in residential building projects. As such, we are reaching out to local building companies with the hope of shadowing a building project for a day in the next month and a half or so. We would also be interested in building tutorials or advice from your group about basic construction practices."
