| May 2010 - Wales - Recommended Pre - Trip Reading! |
One Moonlit Night - by Caradog Prichard
For our first evening in Wales we've arranged for a special after-dinner presentation by the highly respected lecturer Dr. Elwyn Hughes.
This entertaining lecture will consist of a light hearted and informative talk on the Welsh language, culture, traditions and heritage with anecdotes and other fascinating facts.
Prior to our arrival in Wales you may wish to read "One Moonlit Night," as recommended by Dr. Hughes. This suggested pre-trip reading will offer you a compelling snapshot into the unique life of an early twentieth-century Welsh village community.
Dr Hughes has published a unique study of the real-life world behind Prichard's novel and has uncovered the real people that were used as characters in the book. His collection of photographs (presented on Power Point) and anecdotes associated with his research form the basis of his presentation on May 12.
Originally written in Welsh, "Un Nos Ola Leuad" by Caradog Prichard has been translated by Phillip Mitchell and published by Penguin Classics as One Moonlit Night
In a Nutshell: Memorable! Touching! Endearing! One Moonlit Night is one of those rare books that once read will always be remembered!
Note: Before reading the first chapter we suggest you read the page-and-a-half of translator's notes or *blushes*. Throughout the book you'll see the Welsh custom of using nicknames, instead of surnames in order to identify people. You'll find the use of nicknames actually brings an element of charm to the novel, making it all the more endearing. |
