| Highlights from Holland and Belgium - April 13-23, 2009 |
Storybook windmills and the largest flower spectacle on earth!
Over the past five years we've shared many wonderful destinations together.
Today, someone asked me what I would consider to be my favourite trip. I can honestly say that our most recent trip to Holland and Belgium is one of my very favourites.
Our beautiful cruise ship - the River Empress provided us with the opportunity to see Holland the way it is meant to be seen - from the water.
Over 9 glorious days we sailed past storybook windmills and the country's patchwork, rainbow coloured countryside.
We put in at charming ports, giving us the opportunity to explore the fascinating towns of Antwerp, Bruges, Veere, Rotterdam, Dordrecht, Nijmegen,Enkhuizen, Hoorn and Amsterdam.
Highlights included visits to some of the country's greatest treasures such as the Rijksmuseum (home to the paintings of Rembrandt and the country's finest works) as well as the magnificent Kroller - Muller Museum.

| A visit to the Kroller - Muller Museum |
At the Kroller - Muller Museum we admired the incredible collection of Vincent Van Gogh. This collection of 278 works by Van Gogh was left to the Dutch state by Helene Kroller- Muller who spent her life and fortune amassing this incredible collection.
The art museum and park (13,000 acres of woodland) is Holland's largest national park. If there are enough hours in your day, hop on a bike at one of the free bike stations and explore the park at your leisure.
The museum houses collections by other major artists, predominantly of the 19th and 20th centuries: Courbet, Seurat, Picasso and Mondrian to name a few.
Surrounding the museum is one of Europe's largest outdoor sculpture gardens, 47 acres studded with works of 20th century sculptors such as Henry Moore, Richard Serra and Claes Oldenburg.
"I dream my painting and then I paint my dream." Vincent Van Gogh

| Rijksmuseum - an Ode to Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age |
A special highlight of the trip was our visit to the Netherlands' greatest museum, the Rijkmuseum.
In this turreted neo-gothic museum, there are 150 rooms full of the country's finest works, including those of the Old Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn (1606 -1669)
His magnificent The Night Watch (1642) is located on the upper floor of the Rijksmuseum.
The enormous king-size canvas is Rembrandt's best known painting and one of the world's most famous, has a grand hall all to itself. |
| Happy Mother's Day! |
|
This Mother's Day, give yourself a gift. Take a little space of time and rediscover your passion. What makes you tick? What puts a smile on your face? What things have you put on hold because you've been too busy taking care of everyone else? Rediscovering that core piece of your being will be a special gift you will never wear out or outgrow.
In honour of Mothers Day - Here is little trivia about mothers from:
Believe It or Not Records
Mothers Day Trivia:Youngest Mother The youngest mother whose history is authenticated is Lina Medina, who delivered a 6½-pound boy by cesarean section in Lima, Peru in 1939, at an age of 5 years and 7 months. The child was raised as her brother and only discovered that Lina was his mother when he was 10.
Mothers Day Trivia:Oldest Mother On April 9, 2003, Satyabhama Mahapatra, a 65-year-old retired schoolteacher in India, became the world's oldest mother when she gave birth to a baby boy. Satyabhama and her husband had been married 50 years, but this is their first child. The baby was conceived through artificial insemination using eggs from the woman's 26-year-old niece, Veenarani Mahapatra, and the sperm of Veenarani's husband.
Mothers Day Trivia:Highest Recorded Number of Children The highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother is 69, to the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev (1707-1782) of Shuya, Russia. Between 1725 and 1765, in a total of 27 confinements, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. 67 of them survived infancy.
Mothers Day Trivia:Highest Number of Children in Modern Times The modern world record for giving birth is held by Leontina Albina from San Antonio, Chile. Leontina claims to be the mother of 64 children, of which only 55 of them are documented. She is listed in the 1999 Guinness World Records but dropped from later editions.
Mothers Day Trivia:From the Animal Kingdom A female oyster over her lifetime may produce over 100 million young.
A mother giraffe often gives birth while standing, so the new born's first experience outside the womb is a 1.8-meter (6-foot) drop.
Just like people, mother chimpanzees often develop lifelong relationships with their offspring.
Kittens are born both blind and deaf, but the vibration of their mother's purring is a physical signal that the kittens can feel - it acts like a homing device, signaling them to nurse.
Happy Mother's Day!
... from all your friends at Broad Horizons.
