Greetings!
Summer is here and I wanted to share some real benefits of practicing yoga in warmer temperatures.
Why is asana practice so beneficial in the summer?
- Your body's core temperature is already higher, allowing you to get warmed up more quickly and experience a deeper and stronger practice.
- Keeping up your practice helps to prevent injuries during hiking, water skiing, biking or other summer activities that you might participate in.
- Maintaining a regular practice through the summer helps to prevent potential weight gain from lethargy induced by the "let's go hang in the sun" attitude.
Summer in the Seattle area is also a wonderful time to practice yoga outdoors. There's just something to be said for working out outside, especially when the weather is nice. By getting out of the yoga studio and into nature, you can experience yoga in a whole new way. There is something really magical about practicing on the grass on a warm, sunny day with a gentle breeze and the sound of birds in the background. Being outdoors gives you access to a whole other world of sensations. With that in mind, our weekday noon classes for the remainder of July and August will take place at Memorial Park (i.e. the train park behind the police station in Issaquah), unless it is raining or too cloudy. Please sign in online beforehand and meet us at the park to practice an invigorating sequence of sun salutations designed to awaken your senses, enhance your focus, and help you reconnect to the natural world.
Summer is also a great time to practice Yin Yoga, a powerful practice designed to teach you to slow down, de-compress, let go, and heal. Most people familiar with yoga are used to Yang styles (such as Power Vinyasa and Hatha Flow), as these tend to be more common in Western culture. Yang practices stimulate the muscles in the body, encouraging strength and great physical health. Over time, however, it is important for Vinyasa practitioners to counterbalance their Yang practice with Yin Yoga at least once a week to prevent the joints of the body from weakening and becoming susceptible to injury. As one ages, a lack of flexible joints in the body increases the risk of pain. When you look at the elderly or injured athletes, you will often see that the degeneration lies within the joints. Yin Yoga focuses on slowly stretching connective tissue around joints, which in turn also helps to strengthen them. In order to access connective tissue without activating muscles, the room is not heated. Postures are passive and held for a length of time to increase awareness and prana flow to suggested areas. Due to numerous requests, we are now offering Yin Yoga on Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. in addition to the popular Saturday 4:00 p.m. Yin Yoga class.
Our early morning classes have also been really popular this summer so we just brought Mondays at 6:00 a.m. back. Our first class this morning was awesome!
Still on the subject of nice, warm weather: many of you have asked me whether our upcoming teacher training in sunny Brazil would be a good fit for you so I wrote an article about what one should expect from a yoga teacher training. Please read our latest blog Is Yoga Teacher Training for You? if you want to learn more.
Enjoy your summer!
