UAC has been a leader in promoting affirmative action for the past 30 years, advocating for the representation of women and minorities in areas where they have been historically excluded. Minority inclusion strategies and economic opportunity plans developed by UAC have resulted in over $1.7 billion in contracts to minorities, women, the disabled, and local entrepreneurs.
Coalition president, Sharmain Matlock-Turner was recently invited participate in the 2nd Annual George Boyer Vashon Lecture Series, sponsored by Duanne Morris, LLP. Randall L. Kennedy, Harvard Law Professor and award-winning author, served as guest lecturer. Top leaders were asked to share their thoughts on affirmative action. The discussion was moderated by David L. Cohen, Executive Vice President, Comcast Corporation, and featured Joanne Epps, Dean and Law Professor at Temple Univ.; Thomas G. Servodidio, Duane Morris partner and chair of the Employment, Labor, Benefits and Immigration Practice, and Nolan N. Atkinson, Jr., Duane Morris partner and Chief Diversity Officer. Mr. Atkinson, Jr., is also the great-grandson of George Boyer Vashon, a black educator, lawyer and abolitionist.

This is where democracy really can have an impact on policy change." -- Carlos Cartagena, UAC Program Manager, was recently selected as a 2012 Hispanics in Philanthropy (HIP) Leadership Fellow. HIP is a national organization that seeks to promote and strengthen leadership of individuals in the nonprofit sector.

April was financial literacy month and UAC's Community & Economic Development (CED) department sponsored a series of events throughout the community. One was an experts' panel discussion that offered UAC staff valuable information on real estate, banking, and investing. They touched on the benefits of smart home-ownership vs. long-term renting; investing to make your money work for you; and the importance of choosing the appropriate loan to avoid an imbalance of assets to liabilities.
