Arise Works With SRC to Secure Charter
On Thursday evening, the School Reform Commission (SRC) met to make a decision regarding the renewal of the Charter of ARISE Academy.
CEO, Gabe Kuriloff, student Myliesha Baker and Board Chair, Steve Wanner, made a compelling case for renewal. Gabe and Steve addressed the school's solid academic plan and the board's commitment to quality governance. Myliesha told of her life changing experience at ARISE. The SRC listened.
SRC members uniformly expressed an understanding of the value of ARISE and recognized leadership's focused commitment to success. While they felt they could not justify a five year renewal, the SRC members indicated that they were torn by the decision and wanted to give the school more time to execute their plan.
Toward this end, they agreed to work with ARISE Academy's new board chair and CEO to craft a plan to include measurable performance targets that would allow the school to remain open.

Freedom Rings Invites Supporters to "Do Nothing"

Most of us couldn't live without the Internet, but 41% of Philadelphians don't have access. This is a big problem, not just for them, but for us all. We pay the price in slower economic growth, higher social service costs and a less-engaged citizenry. This weekend, the Freedom Rings Partnership is sponsoring an Internet Fast. They are asking all Philadelphians to give up the Internet for 41 hours, starting at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 and ending at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, April 23. Show your support and sign-up. Student loan debt has reached over a trillion dollars! For this reason, UAC has partnered with Philadelphia City Controller, Alan Butkovitz for his Bank on Philadelphia program. This week, as part of the program, UAC's Tiffany Thurman taught a financial aid workshop to students at Philadelphia Mennonite High School. Students learned about the importance of understanding the basics of student loans. This is one of many financial literacy courses that will be provided by UAC throughout April -- Financial Literacy Month. A story on the workshop aired on NBC 10's Consumer Watch.
