Community Shows Support For Arise

Arise Arise Academy Charter High School opened its doors in September 2009 as the nation's first public charter high school dedicated exclusively to students in foster care. Founded with the support of UAC, the school provides a place of continuity and security for hundreds of at-risk students to achieve success. Arise's charter is up for renewal this year and the School Reform Commission will vote on its fate on April 19th. Students, parents, teachers, and advocates are continuing to show their strong support for Arise. Among those that have already written letters of support are Councilwomen Marian Tasco and Blondell Reynolds Brown and State Representative Dwight Evans.

If you would like to show your support you can write to Pedro Ramos, Chairman, School Reform Commission, 440 N. Broad Street, Suite 101, Philadelphia, PA 19130.

Help Save Summer Jobs For Youth
Save Summer JobsEach summer UAC places students in jobs. Opportunities for summer jobs for youth via WorkReady Philadelphia were cut in half in 2011 due to reductions in public funding.  A total of 5,336 young people were served, down from over 11,000 in 2010; those that remained on the waiting list last summer outnumbered those served 2 to 1.

This summer, forecasted cuts could potentially result in having less than 5,000 summer jobs available for youth. Learn more about how you can make a difference for young people who want to work this summer by going to www.savesummerjobs.org
