| An Entrepreneur's Perspective
A Small Biz Perspective On Health Care
We've heard the arguments from both sides and they are not worth repeating. From the perspective of a small biz and entrepreneur attorney, I see the world through the eyes of the entrepreneur. Individuals and families are economic units. On the other hand, I see the group or organizing as a means of unfairly favoring the group over the individual. Why not, there is more leverage. Isn't this true with healthcare? City, State and federal employees, members of unions, large corporations and their employees generally have cadillac healthcare plans. Somebody has to pay for these plans. The costs get pushed downwards to individuals and small businesses. Our plans are not as generous and are more costly.
In Washington, one party generally wants a national group plan; and the other wants to allow small businesses to group together. I say, lets do away with group plans, altogether. Let's treat everyone the same. If you are going to have a mandate, have an individual mandate (as opposed to employer mandate); if there's a tax credit, give it to the individual, rather than the corporation; if you want a cadillac plan, you pay for it; if you leave your job, or start your own business, doesn't matter, it's your plan. In sum, there are no group plans - only individual plans. Everyone bears the burden of paying for their own plan, regardless of worker status or associations. Let's treat everyone the same.
In this post-industrial age/entrepreneur era, our laws need to favor and benefit the entrepreneur/individual rather than the group. It's where the talent is. We need to stimulate the grassroots in the new economy. |
