Dear Members, Friends & Supporters,

It has been quite a busy time for Second Wind Dreams!  So much is happening, I don't know where to begin!  So, I'll let the pictures and the stories do my talking for me!

As we continue to grow and help more elders realize their dreams, I am forever amazed at the power of those dreams!  You are all so instrumental in the growth that we are seeing.  Thank you for all you do to keep the dream alive!

Warmly,
Laurie Labishak

Warren & The Hawks

It had been a while.  Warren Peters, a resident of Elmcroft Assisted Living, told Carmela, the activities Director, that he wished he could see a professional basketball game again.  A little dream it seems to most of us, but Warren's dream none the less.  Having lived much of his life in Florida and Georgia, his favorite teams are Miami Heat and Atlanta Hawks.  Note: Warren is a retired aerospace engineer who was one of the designers of the capsule that landed on the moon in '69.  So Carmela went to the phone speaking to Tamara with the Hawks organization.  She offered complimentary tickets, permission to sit courtside and watch warm-ups.  Warren was thrilled.  On Sunday, March 28th, Carmela escorted to the game - Hawks vs. Pacers.  Hawks won!  Icing on the cake.  Warren's description of his special day "It was exceptional."  A happy man.  All this comes from the vision of a very important organization called Second Wind Dreams making dreams come true for our senior population, the greatest generation.

Scholarships Awarded!

On May 5th, four eldercare communities in the San Diego area were awarded lifetime memberships thanks to the Harrah's Foundation and the Harrah's Rincon Resort in Valley Center, CA.  Those receiving scholarships were Somerford Place of Encinitas, CA, Valle Vista Convalescent Hospital of Escondido, CA, Vista Village of Vista, CA and Las Villas de Carlsbad of Carlsbad, CA.

As part of our partnership with the Harrah's Foundation, each elder care community will have a team of Harrah's employee volunteers that will make up a HERO (Harrah's Employees Reaching Out) team.  These volunteers will work with the ECCs to help discover and fulfill the dreams of the elders living in each community.

We are very proud of our association with the Harrah's Foundation and look forward to awarding more scholarships very soon!

Dreams Coming True!
Betty & Legendary Cardinal Jack Clark
Carlyle Cardinals

Robert & Legendary Cardinal Jack Clark
Carlyle Cardinals 2

Carlyle Healthcare Center residents, Robert Hustedde, 68 yrs old, and Betty Wilder, 85 yrs old are extreme St. Louis Cardinals fans.  Robert & Betty are both die-hard Cardinals' fans and they wanted to go to the new stadium and watch them play ball.  We started by contacting everyone we knew that was connected to the Cardinals.  We got in touch with Mark Taylor of the Cardinals organization and the wheels were set in motion.  He set us up with 6 tickets in the Redbird Club right behind home plate.  We called the families and Robert's family was right on board and they will take him to the game.  Betty's family is out of town, however, and unable to escort her so a couple of the staff members volunteered to share this dream with her.

The tickets are for Wednesday, May 12th at 7:15 pm.  They have been fans for their entire lives and this will be a literal dream come true.  New stadium, old motto, "you build it they will come."

They were seated by Jack Clark - legendary ball player who was with the St. Louis Cardinals from 1985-1987.  He also played for  various other major league teams and earned the nick name "Jack the Ripper" for his powerful swing at bat!

A great time was had by all!

We have received a challenge grant of $4000 to help us fund a part time employee in our home office.  This position would support the home office staff and help manage our up and coming interactive website for all of our members.  If you or someone you know would like to take the callenge and match this donation or donate any amount, please click here to make a donation now!

Sincerely,
