Dear Dreamweavers & Supporters,

National Nursing Home Week is right around the corner!  I'm sure you all have wonderful plans for celebrating this week with your elders.  Second Wind Dreams would like to challenge our members to make dreams come true duing this special week.  As you make your plans, we encourage you to  include a dream celebration during this week.  We would also like to provide an incentive for you to make dreams come true - remember no matter how big or how small!  For the ECC who completes the most dreams during nursing home week and submits their dream outcome forms within 14 days of your dream celebration that week, we will award $100 for your ongoing dream program.

We encourage you to participate and make this an incredible week of dreamweaving!  We will help you in whatever way we can!  Feel free to contact us anytime!

Warmly,
Laurie Labishak

Virtual Dementia Tour Forum

By: P.K. Beville

I have begun the exhilarating task of contacting all of our VDT purchasers!!!!!  There are literally hundreds of you world wide.  It is a blast to learn how the VDT is received and the creative ways it is being used.  The calls I am making are to insure that I have the correct email address for the VDT users because in the next several weeks we are developing the first VDT Forum!!!  Exciting indeed.

We will be sharing some of the tricks of the trade, guest spots from VDT facilitators and Certified Trainers.  New research and studies will be shared just to name a few of the things we will be doing.

If you have a VDT kit and haven't heard from me, feel free to email me with your name or the names of the people at your site that want to be in the forum by clicking HERE .  This Forum will move us even closer to attempting to understand how a person with dementia may feel and help our staff and caregivers provide better care....the ultimate goal.

Honoring Our American Heroes

Second Wind Dreams has always sought to honor the men and women who have served our country in the Armed Forces.  With our weekly e-blast, we would like to honor one of these individuals each week from our member ECCs.  We need your help to make this happen.  We would ask that you submit photos of your veterans, in uniform if at all possible, and a brief story about their service to our country.  We will select one story for each week and let you know when your elder's stories will be used.  We are hoping that the response is so great that we may be able to honor more than one each week!  Be sure and get the elder's permission before submitting the story and picture.  Submit stories by clicking the link below.

Dream Discovery - How do I find a dream?
by: Laurie Labishak

Finding the dream is usually the most rewarding part of dreamweaving because it allows us the opportunity to get to know our elders in a whole new way.  When you begin the process of dream discovery, we recommend that you use the tools you received in your membership manual.  The dream disovery form is a tool that has evolved over the 13 years that we have been at this.  Although we have adjusted it here or there, the main focus of this tool is to create conversation with the elder.  The questions allow them to think about things they may have long since forgotten.  Many times an elder will say during the dream discovery process, "I haven't thought about that in years".  Through the process of conversation with the elder, memories are unlocked and dreams are revealed.  You may never hear the words "I always dreamed . . ." but, you will hear the elder's heart's desire as you begin to know them on a deeper level.
Remember, when you are visiting with an elder, don't "look" for the dream - allow the dream to reveal itself.  You may not even realize what has been revealed until you review your notes after leaving the elder.  Then, the dreamweaving can begin!
