To facilitate better understanding, we will answer one Frequently Asked Question about New Moon Foundation in each issue of this newsletter.
Is New Moon Foundation a Buddhist organization?
No, we are not a Buddhist religious organization, and welcome all people to enjoy our offerings. Our co-founders, Bennett Dorrance, Jr and Thuy Fujimoto, were inspired to create New Moon Foundation through their shared experience with Pureland Buddhism, especially through teachers at Amida Trust. They used the principles of Engaged Buddhism to create the 5 Core Values of New Moon Foundation, which reflect teachings of "the Four Noble Truths."
Our Core Values - Awareness,Gratitude, Openness to Others, Accountability, and Wholeheartedness - are integrated into our daily actions and practicing these together we call "Right Relationship."

Dear Friends of New Moon Foundation:
We are pleased to share with you the first edition of our electronic newsletter, which we are calling "Lotus Rising." Through it we intend to provide information on our programs, events, and projects that support Opening the Mind, Engaging the Heart, and Inspiring Action. It will also be a vehicle for us to share quotes, photos, and interesting tidbits of news that we hope might be a source of inspiration to our friends. This will replace sending individual email announcements in most cases, and will allow you to see an entire calendar of events listed into the future, when you click the "Calendar of Events" link.
If you would like to continue to receive this newsletter, approximately once a month, you don't need to do anything. If you prefer not to receive it, just click the "safeunsubscribe" link at the bottom of the newsletter. Please feel free to forward this newsletter to friends who may have an interest.
With gratitude,
The founders and staff at New Moon Foundation |

Meet Wildlife Expert Linda Elliott Saturday, June 7. Tours at 9 a.m. & 10 a.m.
New Moon Foundation is happy to host Linda Elliott as she leads an interactive exploration of the endangered Koloa duck at a new native habitat being built for them in North Kohala. Participants will be transported from New Moon offices to recently created ponds at 1700 feet, where planting and habitat creation is in process.
Elliott, through her work as director of Hawaii Wildlife Center, makes a difference in our community by protecting native species in Kohala. Her inspired vision of attainable goals will help to reverse the extinction trends of endemic birds, reinforce biological diversity, and develop emergency protocols for caring for sick and injured birds.
Space for this event is limited and a $10 donation is requested to benefit the Wildlife Center. To register, call 889-0615.

Celebrate the Summer Solstice Friday, June 20th 6:30 p.m.
Ka La loa mai ka Po, translates to The long day into the night. Kalani Souza is a gifted mediator, activist, poet, philosopher, singer and songwriter on the Big Island. On June 20th Kalani will be our Fire Ring Guide (Alaka'i) as we welcome the summer, and navigate the "tiny slice of the present that separates the night from the day" (Hawaii Conscious Living, Summer 2007).
As a major celestial event, the Summer Solstice results in the longest day and the shortest night of the year. Join us in honoring the changing seasons with music, storytelling, and a blessing for the summer.
Bring your own lawn chairs or a beach blanket and meet us at the New Moon office area, 53-496 'Iole Road in Kapa'au. |

Four Kohala Scholars Set Out for UH-HILO

Four graduating seniors from Kohala High School set out for UH-Hilo with a full ride scholarship sponsored by New Moon Foundation. We are please to announce the recipients of the third annual Kohala First Year Scholarship. The winners are: Joseph Hasegawa, Lavinia Holschuh, Mandie Ku, and Tiana Savedra. The former Kohala High School students will attend UH-Hilo free of financial burden for their freshman year during the 2008-2009 academic year, thanks to the generosity of our funding partners, the Lally Family of Kamuela and the Dorrance Family Foundation of Arizona.
We extend our thanks to the Kohala High School Selection Committee who encouraged the students to apply based on several factors including being the first generation to attend college, demonstrating leadership, and financial need.
