 Changing the face of cancer
| |
|
Dear Friend,
Those who offer their time and
resources to Lazarex never cease to amaze and impress me. Our volunteers
contributed more than 7,600 hours last year, with an official value of
approximately $320,000. And while financial contributions are crucial, the time
people offer greatly warms my heart. A special thank you goes out to all of our
volunteers.
One of the major challenges we
face is raising the profile of Lazarex and the bridge to hope that we build for
our patients. Since our last newsletter, we were successful in convincing Insights with Hugh Downs to produce two
segments on Lazarex. The final product is not yet available, but I believe we
successfully communicated the value and urgency of our work. Please look for us
on CNBC, MSNBC, Fox News, TLC, Family Net and Discovery in the coming months.
Our VIP (Very Important
Patient) this month is Brittany Hess. Brittany is battling alveolar soft part sarcoma and with
help from Lazarex she is able to continue to participate in a promising
clinical trial. We think you will be inspired by Brittany's story.
Unfortunately, bad news
sometimes creeps into the picture when dealing with cancer. Some of you may
remember Scott Zenaro, our VIP in the January newsletter. Scott passed away in
February after a six year battle with Ewing's
Sarcoma. Lazarex is proud of its association with Scott and his family and
takes pride in its role in giving Scott nearly three years of life after
conventional medicine told him it could do nothing more.
Please help us spread hope for patients like
Scott and Brittany
by forwarding this email to friends who
you think would be interested in Lazarex Cancer Foundation.
If you're interested in
supporting Lazarex with a financial donation or if you have a fundraising idea
beyond those featured on this newsletter or on our website, send Susan an email.
Won't you join us in building a
bridge to hope for end stage cancer patients and their families?
Sincerely,

Dana Dornsife

Meet
Very Important Patient (VIP) Brittany Hess

Top left to right Lazarex Director of Development Susan
Sappington, Brittany's
father Jim Hess and Lazarex President Dana Dornsife. Bottom, Brittany's mother Bonni
Hess and Brittany at Lazarex headquarters on March 9. Photo by Karen Ambrogi. To meet Brittany Hess is to see a vibrant, 27-year old woman
with boundless enthusiasm and a passionate zest for life. This belies the fact
that she has been dealing with alveolar
soft part sarcoma (ASPS) since 2001 when she was diagnosed at Stage IV. Her
symptom was a small lump on her left thigh.
Since her diagnosis, Brittany
has undergone 23 surgical procedures to remove or destroy tumors on her thigh
and in her lungs, liver, brain, breast,
tibia, spine, and abdomen, and she has participated in three clinical
trials. Because of the rarity of ASPS, she and her parents have traveled
all over the United States and Canada for various treatments. Through it
all she remains optimistic, as she and her boyfriend recently bought a house
together and have adopted a puppy.
Brittany hopes to become a nurse someday, but her illness and
the travel required for her treatments have made the commitment required to
obtain a nursing degree impossible. She has worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the Oncology Unit at Overlake Hospital in
Bellevue, Washington, but the debilitating pain from two major spinal surgeries
to remove tumors caused her to leave that job. Chronic spinal pain and side
effects of the Cediranib Clinical Trial medication currently prevent Brittany
from being able to participate in many of her hobbies, including motorcycle
riding, skiing, boating, backpack traveling, soccer, and other activities which
she has always enjoyed and pursued.
When she visited our
offices to participate in the Insights taping
she told us, "I'll never give up. I have too much to live for." Brittany's story
inspires us every day.

Meet William and Teresa White
Team for Life Members
Bill and Tere sa White own
and operate an Allstate Insurance Agency in Danville, CA. One of their most
unique products, and one that is often overlooked, is Cancer Insurance.
Allstate pays benefits directly to the client to help cover cancer-related costs
that health insurance may not cover. The Whites are encouraging their clients to
make it a standard element in their insurance portfolios.
"We're trying to protect our
clients from the financial hardships associated with fighting this
disease, so they can concentrate on getting well." Early detection is critical in
the elimination and treatment of these types of diseases, this policy pays for
preventative screenings for men and women. "No one likes to think about getting
cancer," Bill said. "The facts are that men have about a 50% lifetime risk of
contracting cancer and women have about a 33% chance."
Teresa
added "From the first moment we met Dana and her incredible team we were
touched by their obvious passion for the suffering of families dealing with the
critical stages of cancer. Dana's struggle from a personal family experience
and her desire to help others echoed the philosophy we believe in. In many
instances when we donate to organizations the total amount of the gift never
really reaches the cause it was intended for. With Lazarex every dollar that is
donated makes a difference. Bill and I are motivated additionally by the "Team for Life" fundraising program. As members
we find Cit is a tangible way to see our donation grow and to be challenged to
rally with others to reach a larger goal. Our participation and commitment to Lazarex
is made possible by the unique cancer product we offer. As we work together we truly can build a bridge to hope."
If you would like more information regarding this
valuable coverage, contact the White Agency at (925) 820-7500, or email billwhite@allstate.com.
