Dear Friend,

There is no doubt that 2009 was a challenging year for the non-profit sector, including Lazarex Cancer Foundation. That is why I am pleased to report the success we enjoyed with our fundraising events in September and October.

Our Bridge to Hope Music Festival raised $50,000 in September, the San Jose Rock & Roll run garnered $20,000, barbecue food at the Hogs & Hens Cook Off contributed $24,000, and we earned about $12,000 with our Halloween Party.

We have a full slate of fall and winter fundraising events under the capable direction of our Director of Development, Susan Sappington. Whether you are a runner, a theme park enthusiast, or just like to party, we have programs for you. There are many ways you can help change the face of cancer. Read on! Speaking of runners, you can read in our newsletter about new hire Jenny Walls, who will serve us as our Endurance Event Coordinator and running coach.

Our VIP (Very Important Patient) this month is Ruth Oliver. Ruth was diagnosed about a year ago with stage four Pancreatic Cancer and is now in clinical remission and doing well. Her doctors are shocked, and we think you will be deeply moved by her story.

Be sure to read our story about young Haley Morucci who showed tremendous spirit supporting her uncle in his struggle with lung cancer. Her story will inspire you, as it does us.

If you're interested in supporting Lazarex with a financial donation, or if you have a fundraising idea, send Susan an email.

We wish you all a blessed, healthy holiday season and thank you for making 2009 a year of hope for our patients.

Sincerely,
Dana's sig

Very Important Patient (VIP) Update:
"Mission Accomplished" for Ruth Oliver

Ruth is the first Lazarex Cancer Foundation patient in an FDA clinical trial for pancreatic cancer declared to be in clinical remission!

Andrea portraitOn July 25, 2008 Ruth was diagnosed with recurrent cancer in her pancreas. She was advised that she may have up to 7 months to live at the most. The only treatment that doctors could offer was more chemotherapy. This was proven not to work for her, and a local physician suggested that Ruth contact the large hospitals to see if they could help. Instead, she spent day and night looking for alternative treatments and found the Rexin-G clinical trial on the website ClinicalTrials.gov. She gave the info to her doctor who said she must go immediately. See Ruth's story

She entered a Rexin-G clinical trial in California and became a Lazarex patient over one year ago. With the help of this treatment and Lazarex, her doctor proved prescient. Ruth responded so well that in October 2009 Ruth was declared to be in clinical remission!

"We are thrilled for Ruth," said Lazarex President Dana Dornsife. "Her situation is a perfect example of why we do what we do. What a blessing!"

We at Lazarex are deeply grateful to all of you for your generous support. This and many other life affirming experiences would not be possible without you. Thank you on behalf of our patients, their families and friends.

Morucci familyClockwise from top: Uncle Dan, Susan Sappington, Dana Dornsife and Haley Morucci

In one small package 12-year-old Haley Morucci is a bracelet designer, a fund raiser, a spokesperson, and a compassionate family member who recognizes a need and develops an action plan to fill that need and warm our hearts.

Haley remembers overhearing her parents talk about "Uncle Dan," a 44-year-old close family friend. Uncle Dan was undergoing intensive chemotherapy for lung cancer after twice winning battles with Hodgkin's Disease.  "They had been talking for a few days about the options," she said. "So I went online and checked out (the Lazarex) Website. I thought it was really cool, and I wanted to do something that would help them." She combined her drive with her knowledge and love of the small rubber bracelets popularized by Lance Armstrong to develop a winning program for Lazarex in honor of Uncle Dan.

"I looked online for a Website that would make those. I found the Website and I designed the rubber bracelet," she said. The bright orange bracelets bear the message "Hope, Dignity and Life - Lazarex Cancer Foundation." With friend Lauren Ibsen, Haley began selling the bracelets for $2. Her campaign continues to grow and she has raised more than $1,600 at press time.

"This is absolutely the most important donation we have ever received as it represents not only love and kindness, but the realization from someone so small that life matters and she can make a difference in the world," said Lazarex founder and president Dana Dornsife.

Meet New Employee Jenny Walls!
Experienced Runner to Take Charge of Endurance Events

Jenny WallsFrom the left: Lazarex Endurance Event Coordinator Jenny Walls, Olympic Silver Medalist  Meb Keflezighi and Lazarex Director of Development Susan Sappington

With the emphasis we are placing on raising funds through running events, our Board of Directors felt it was important to find someone with experience in this area who also would understand our mission. We found that person in Jenny Walls.

Walls, 25, is both a veteran runner and coach and has run events in honor of her aunt who passed away from brain cancer. Walls' grandfather also died of cancer, and her grandmother is a breast cancer survivor. Her background includes a stint as an advertising account manager for ESPN.com.

According to coach Walls, all of her family members are runners, and no family get-together is complete without everyone going for a long, invigorating run. That's all to the good, but Jenny has also experienced up close and personal the devastating impact of how cancer can rip through families, which is part of why she is taking on this new assignment with us. She will be responsible for coordinating all our endurance events and helping train our teams in these events.

Jenny can be reached at 1.918.633.4283 or jenny@lazarex.org. Please give her a call to discuss details of any endurance event or just to welcome her to the team.
