 Create a Hummingbird Garden Habitat

Hummingbird A Hummingbird Habitat includes all types of hummingbird flowers (annuals, perennials, vines, shrubs and trees) and provides space for hummingbirds to nest and locations in which they can roost and find shelter from the elements.  A well designed Hummingbird Habitat also includes several properly maintained feeders and a water element such as a fountain or bird bath in which hummingbirds can bathe.  The most effective Hummingbird Habitats attract and nurture tiny insects and spiders that hummingbirds use as a sources for fats and proteins.

Keep in mind that hummingbirds like bright-colored flowers with lots of nectar.

 Trumpet Shaped Flower

Hummingbirds love tubular-shaped flowers, although that shape is not required.  Fragrance is not important to them, but vivid colors of red, purple, orange and yellow will attract them to your garden.

Hummingbirds Favorite Flowers

Annuals:  Nasturtium, Petunia and Zinnia

Perennials: Bee Balm, Butterfly Weed, Columbine, Hummingbird Mint
                Penstemon, Sage, and Speedwell

  Hummingbird Feeders

Keep your feeders Clean, Clean, Clean!!!!

 Hummingbird Feeder
Hummingbirds must feed 3-5 times per hour and your hummingbirds may become reliant on your garden for it's food, but there may be periods when there are no blossoms from which they can get nectar.

Its a good idea to provide hummingbird feeders hung about 30 feet apart throughout your garden for these times.  The best color for a feeder is bright red to attract the birds from a distance.

Hummingbird Feeder 2
Perfect Hummer Food Recipe

1 cup sugar to 4 cups water
Bring solution to a boil to kill bacteria
--allow to cool--
Fill feeders just enough for a day or two.
Extra solution may be refrigerated if
used within 1 week.

Never fill your feeders with anything but sugar-water mix of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water.  Do not use food coloring of any kind.

(Mini Blossom Feeders available for sale and In stock)

Using the wrong kinds of sugar solutions or leaving moldy feeders out can kill hummingbirds and their babies.

Hummingbird Trivia

Hummingbird
The Portuguese name for "hummingbird" literally translated means "flower-kisser."

Hummingbirds beat their wings at a rate of 40-80 per second and fly 30 mph.

Hummingbirds are the only species of birds that can truly fly backwards and upside down.

The heart rate for a hummingbird is between 500 and 1260 beats per minute during the day and drops to below 50 during the night.

Hummingbirds are the smallest of all birds, measuring between 2.5-8 inches.
