Gardening Tips
Pansies Are Great For Easter
Happy
Mix (our recommended brand) -
The names 'pansy' and 'viola' are interchangeable. There are many
cultivars within the genus Viola, and most of them are hybrids of the same
handful of species, so there are so many similarities that only a botanist
really cares which is which. Pansies as cool weather flowers with almost
heart-shaped, overlapping petals in bright colors or bicolor, often with
face-like center markings.
Pansies are one of the most popular and recognizable cool
weather annuals. Breeding has produced pansies that are better able to
stand up to the cold, but there hasn't been much luck producing more heat
tolerant varieties. Many pansies are bicolored, making them striking plants for
their small size. Although delicate, they are surprisingly hardy, and like
their cousins the violas and violets, the flowers are edible.
As compact, low growers pansies are ideal for edging and for
squeezing between rock walls and paths.
But they must be removed in summer. They're a great choice for early and
late season containers and complement spring flowering bulbs, since they will
begin to flower as the bulb foliage begins to fade. If you like the variety of
colors but still want a sense of cohesion, select plants of the same series.
They'll be similar in size and markings, regardless of the color.
Growing
Violas
Viola
is the name of a genus containing about 500 different species. Most garden
cultivated violas are grown as annuals, or short-lived perennials. However,
many will self-seed and delight you for years to come.
How to Grow Violas
Violas
are primarily cool season bloomers. They are perfect for starting and ending
the season in colder climates, and for bridging the seasons in warmer zones
where they can remain in bloom throughout the winter, so plant your violas
based on your specific climate.All-Seasons Mixture Viola (New Variety)
A multi-season
wonder - spring or fall! 'Penny' is
hardy and heat tolerant for a continuous blast of color, known for
continuous flowering from the beginning to the end of season. 4 - 6"H x 4 - 6"W

Easter Lilies
A Beautiful Symbol of the Easter
Season
Easter
Lilies, (Lilium longiflorum), with their large, white, trumpet-shaped
flowers and wonderful fragrance are a traditional Easter time treat. Whether
you plan to give the potted plants as a gift or use them to decorate your own
home, the following tips will help make your Easter Lilies keep on giving.
Select medium-to-compact plants that are
well balanced and proportional in size - not too tall and not too short. As the flowers mature, remove the yellow
anthers before the pollen starts to shed. When a mature flower starts to wither
after its prime, cut it off to make the plant more attractive while you still
enjoy the fresher, newly opened blooms.
In the home Easter Lilies prefer maderately cool tempertures. Recommended daytime temperatures run between 60 to 65 degrees
F, with slightly cooler night temperatures. Avoid placing plants near drafts,
and avoid exposure to excess heat or dry air from appliances, fireplaces or
heating ducts. The lily will thrive near a window in bright, indirect natural
daylight, but avoid glaring, direct sunlight.
Easter Lilies prefer moderately moist,
well-drained soil. Water the plant thoroughly when the soil surface feels dry
to a light touch, but avoid over-watering. If the pot is wrapped in decorative
foil, be careful not to let the plant sit in trapped, standing water. For best
results, remove the plant from decorative pots or covers; take it over the sink
and water thoroughly until water seeps out of the pots drain holes to
completely saturate the soil. Allow the plant to air for a few minutes and
discard the excess water before replacing it back into its decorative pot
cover.
After the last bloom has withered and has
been cut away, you can continue to grow your Easter Lilies, and even plant them
outside in your garden to enjoy them for years to come. Once the lilies have
finished flowering, place the potted plants in a sunny location. Continue to
water thoroughly as needed, and add one teaspoon of slow-release Osmocote
fertilizer every 6 weeks.
