Water Safety 101 |
It may seem a bit early for an article on swimming, but now is the time that families are planning vacations, signing up for camps, and generally mapping out their summer. Here in hot, humid, Maryland, water activities play a major role in almost everyone's plans. That is why Valleybrook is committed to supporting a fun, safe summer for your family.
It may surprise you to know that drowning is the second-leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 19, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The largest groups within that population, reports AAP, are toddlers and teenagers. The importance of learning to swim and continually improving swimming skills should be a major safety concern for children; swim lessons can address that need.
Recommendations vary concerning when to begin swim lessons. Valleybrook begins at age 4, but often even younger children can learn simple skills, like being able to float on their backs for 10 seconds, that can make a life or death difference. Confidence in the water only comes with continual practice. Thankfully, through constant education, parents today would never dream of neglecting to buckle their children in the car. Providing your child with swimming skills to keep them safe in the water is a similar, necessary, safety precaution.
Another "no-brainer": Adult supervision for children of all ages and abilities is essential. Even at pools that provide lifeguards, an adult needs to keep a watchful eye on their own children. The lifeguard's purpose is to enforce rules and to provide life saving techniques when necessary - NOT to supervise everyone's children, which of course is an impossible task.
Valleybrook strives to provide the absolute safest environment possible for our members. As you plan your summer, please consider swim lessons for all your children - here or elsewhere. Many indoor programs exist where you can take lessons now before summer even begins. When choosing summer camps, ask about supervision while swimming and the camper to staff ratio. Even better, choose a camp, like our own It's All Fun and Games, that incorporates swim lessons into the curriculum.
We are excited to spend another great summer of fun and relaxation with our members. Let's make it a safe one for everyone!
