Legislative Link - By Jonathan Zerr | Governmental Affairs Chair
|
I have not received an overwhelming negative response to last week's submission. Those of you who did complain...I am ignoring. As such, this represents my second foray into the realm of weekly articles for the Voice.
On Wednesday, March 28, 2012, the Governmental Affairs Committee of the Chamber sponsored its first Chamber Day at the Missouri Capitol (spelled correctly this week). I would like to thank Georgia and Teresa for planning a stellar day which included an introduction on the Senate floor. We kicked off the morning with a well-attended open house of coffee and donuts at 8 a.m and ended with lunch at Madison's Cafe. We made the most of our opportunities and at lunch we discussed ways to increase our attendance next year throughout the day.
I personally took a beating in the House Local Government Committee hearing (on an unrelated matter), but would claim that the organized Chamber activities were an unquestionable success.
I generally excel at committing social gaffes. Fortunately, I am happy to report that there were no scandals, injuries or embarrassments resulting from our day in Jefferson City. In fact, I received a number of compliments from legislators and lobbyists regarding our efforts to expand the involvement of the Chamber. What better endorsement is there than the compliment of a politician?
Please remember to register for the next Legislative Briefing which will be held on April 20, 2012 at 8:00 a.m. in the Chamber board room.
Finally, Teresa, Georgia and I remain extremely interested in continuing to expand the active membership of the Chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee. If you are interested, please contact Georgia Sanders at the Chamber offices so that your name can be added to the list of contacts for upcoming events.

Adult L.E.A.D.
The Adult L.E.A.D. class topic in march was economic development in Independence. The class first stopped by Dr. Hinson's office to discuss the effects that economic development has on the school district. The class traveled to the Ennovation Center where they were treated to a seminar about the economic outlook of 2012. The class then met with Cindy McClain who discussed the history of the McClain Businesses on the Square. On their final stop, Mayor Don Reimal answered questions from the class regarding the economic atmosphere of Independence.
