Legislative Link - By Jonathan Zerr | Governmental Affairs Chair
| Last month, James and Teresa asked that I begin submitting weekly articles for inclusion in the Voice. This is my inaugural article. I would like to say that I have been holding off until I have really exciting news to provide. However, the simple truth is that I have found ample ways to either forget or become too busy to meet the deadline. I'm not sure of the author, but I'm reminded of a recent quote ..."Most people are so busy knocking themselves out trying to do everything they think they should do, they never get around to what they want to do." Teresa originally suggested that she wanted me to be the Deepak Chopra of Chamber political issues. I fear the title is one that I am sorely ill-equipped to bear. This will represent my first attempt. If the negative response is deafening I promise to stop future submissions.
This week, the Chamber is undertaking its first Chamber Day at the Missouri Capital. Georgia and Teresa, along with members of the Governmental Affairs Committee will be attending a full day of activities in Jefferson City. This will include coffee and donuts on the 3rd Floor Alcove starting at 8:00 a.m., introductions on both the House and Senate floor, and ample opportunities to see our local legislators. The goal this year is to establish the trip as an ongoing tradition with the hope of incorporating discussions on specific legislation in the future. We would welcome any Chamber member to join us for this exciting opportunity.
To date, we have also had three successful Legislative Briefings. I suggest that they have been successful if only because I have not been jeered out of the room. Attendance has been excellent at these Legislative Briefings by both Chamber members and legislators. The next scheduled Legislative Briefing will be at 8:00 a.m. on April 20, 2012 in the Chamber board room.
Finally, Georgia and I are extremely interested in expanding the active membership of the Chamber's Governmental Affairs Committee. We are thrilled with the current members but expansion to a broader group of Chamber members would greatly enhance the direction and discussions. If you are interested, please contact Georgia Sanders at the Chamber so that your name can be added to the list of contacts for upcoming meetings.
Next month, I look forward to providing a glowing report on our Chamber Day at the Capital (including any scandals resulting from the same). Until then, I would remind everyone to vote on April 3.
Jonathan Zerr | Governmental Affairs Chair

Adult L.E.A.D.
The Adult L.E.A.D. class topic in march was economic development in Independence. The class first stopped by Dr. Hinson's office to discuss the effects that economic development has on the school district. The class traveled to the Ennovation Center where they were treated to a seminar about the economic outlook of 2012. The class then met with Cindy McClain who discussed the history of the McClain Businesses on the Square. On their final stop, Mayor Don Reimal answered questions from the class regarding the economic atmosphere of Independence.
