Member: Metropolitan Community College - Blue River

Mark James, chancellor of Metropolitan Community College (MCC), announced he has appointed Dr. Michael Banks president of MCC's Blue River campus in Independence, Mo.

Banks, 51, comes to MCC-Blue River from St. Charles Community College (SCC) in Cottleville, Mo., where he was vice president for academic and student affairs since 2003.

"MCC-Blue River is the district's fastest growing campus and with Dr. Banks' leadership, I am confident the campus will continue to grow and serve the needs of eastern Jackson County and Greater Kansas City for many years," said James.

As vice president at SCC, Banks integrated the academic affairs and student services areas into a unified division, chaired a college-wide facilities needs analysis committee and served on the team that oversaw completion of a $25 million development project. He also chaired the campus security task force and led the campus security leadership team.

Before becoming vice president at SCC, Banks served as dean and division chair of the arts and humanities division at the college. Previously, he worked at Urbana University as assistant professor of speech and theatre and before that served as theatre department chair and assistant professor at Xavier University.

Banks holds a Ph.D. in American studies from Saint Louis University, a master of fine arts in design and technical theatre from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and a bachelor of arts in theatre from Saint Louis University.

"I am honored to be selected as the next president of the MCC-Blue River campus," said Banks. "I am excited to join Chancellor James, the district and campus leadership teams and the outstanding faculty, staff and students of Blue River. I look forward to working with them to further the strong traditions of learning, success, and growth that Blue River and MCC have established in the Kansas City area."

Banks will assume his duties on March 26, 2012. A community reception will be held to welcome him to MCC-Blue River and to the community.

MCC-Blue River, located at 20301 E. 78 Highway in Independence, Mo., serves over 4,000 students each semester. The campus is home to strong general education programs, excellent music and theatre programs and the Trailblazer Collegiate Academy, where motivated high school students can complete an associate's degree during high school. The campus's renowned Public Safety Institute, which provides training for peace officers, firefighters and EMT-paramedics, is poised for expansion to provide community disaster and counter-terrorism planning and assistance.
