The holiday season is upon us. At my Annual Turkey Fry last weekend you would have noticed my attire did not reflect the current season. Shorts, t-shirt and flip flops are not the usual clothing choice for this time of year, but who could pass up the warm weather. As I set up for the event I pondered what this holiday season would bring. For me, this time is about family, friends and not so slimming food choices. As I fast forward through my personal holiday schedule I begin to wonder about the impact this time of year has on a community. We know Thanksgiving brings a mad dash for shopping. Retailers are bombarded with shoppers looking for that perfect gift with the perfect price tag. One of Independence's strong points is the array of diverse businesses that cater to the inner shopper in everyone. This strength in business coincides with the heart of the community.
Take a moment; imagine your upcoming holiday schedule. Now think about how you can incorporate Independence into all aspects. Family & Friends; attend a holiday concert, go ice skating, see a movie, visit a Truman site, or drive around town and look at Christmas lights. Shopping; when you think about shopping in Independence the Center is a popular destination, but also consider your small businesses around town like those found on the Square or Englewood Station Arts District. Eating; Independence offers a wide range of food selections from a cozy booth at a local restaurant to a quick bite, refueling your shopping energy. Volunteer; the community comes together in full force to assist those in need. Look up some local organizations to see how you can help. The cooperative spirit of business and community gives you the opportunity to accomplish your holiday goals in Independence. This message not only stands out during the holidays, but as an overall theme of Independence. The cooperative spirit is what makes Independence a one stop shop. As you plan holiday festivities, remember what Independence has to offer. Your support makes business and community...one voice.
